bathtub. The tub was empty, and there was no water, but her hair and body were still soaked.
“You’re sleepy?” I asked her.
You had to fight to get her into the bath, and then you had to fight to get her out. For some reason, she’d decided the best tactic to avoid getting out of the tub was to say that she was “tired” and “needed a nap.” She’d lay in the tub like this, and if you tried to pull her out, she’d let her whole body go slack and scream at you that she “wanted to sleep.”
“I tried to just pull her out,” Lacey said, “but I was worried she’d bump her head.”
“Yeah,” I said. “She’s tricky like that.”
“Good tricky?” Naomi asked, lifting her head up to look at me.
“Bad tricky,” I said. “Don’t make life difficult for Miss Lacey. You’ve had a long enough nap. Why don’t you get out of the tub before you catch a cold.”
She put her head back down and crossed her arms. “No. I’m still tired.”
I grabbed a towel off the rack and grabbed her with it.
“No, Daddy! No!”
I lifted her up, but supported her weight enough that she couldn’t bonk her head on the tub. Still, it was a lot of dead weight, but the towel helped reduce the friction. When I got her out of the tub, I dropped her onto the bed and wrapped her up tight with the towel.
“It’s a little mummy!” I said, pinching her cheeks.
“No!” she said. “I don’t wanna be a mummy!”
“You’re all wrinkled up because you stayed in the water too long. If you don’t want to be a mummy, next time, you need to get out when Lacey asks you nicely, okay?”
“Okay,” she said.
“Good, now let’s get you dressed.”
We got her dried off, and she picked out some clothes and put them on. Then we went downstairs to relax. I’d eaten lunch with Beatrice, but I still felt hungry, so I poured myself a bowl of cereal.
“You want some?” I asked Lacey.
“Sure,” she said.
We ate cereal together while Naomi read a book. When Lacey was done eating, she read to Naomi.
“You good for dinner tonight?” I asked Lacey as I cleaned off the bowls in the sink.
“With Naomi?” she asked.
“No, with me. Fiancée, remember?”
“Uh,” she said. “What do we have to do?”
“Mingle, I guess. Just be seen. Talk to people. Try to keep everyone happy, that kind of thing.”
I smiled at her. She was keeping me happy. If all of the authors on this boat decided they hated my guts, I’d consider the whole cruise a victory because I’d won Lacey over.
“Okay,” she said.
Lynn came back for Naomi, and Lacey and I headed toward the steakhouse.
The moment we were in the hallway, I looked around to make sure no one was watching, and I pressed her against the wall and kissed her.
She kissed me back with hunger, and my hands started getting a mind of their own. They reached down to her hips. I squeezed her ass, and I drew in a deep breath. She started to moan.
I heard a footstep and pulled away.
An old woman had already turned the corner, and Lacey’s face was beet red. Mine probably was too. I tried to keep a neutral expression and wave to the old woman, but she just shook her head at us as she passed by.
“I couldn’t help it,” I said to Lacey. “You look too damn good in that dress. Those...blue doily things or whatever.”
“Doilies?” she asked, laughing. “Way to make me sound sexy. Like my grandma’s dining table.”
I didn’t know women’s fashion. I knew what looked good, but I didn’t know the names for anything. Her dress was a striking blue with a dark blue waistband that really hugged her curves, and every part of the dress except the dress looked like...doilies. Little holes in the patterns showed her pale white skin, and the dress ended just below her knees, so I could see her calves too.
“What are those patterns called then?”
Lacey shrugged. “No idea. Just don’t call them doilies.”
I kissed her neck and breathed in deeply. She was wearing perfume, and it smelled fucking good mixed in with her natural scent.
I pulled away before some other little old lady could jump around the corner, and I took Lacey’s hand in mine. We walked slowly toward the restaurant, and we stopped on the deck and watched the sunset together.
