right now.”
“You’re going to make me chase you for the rest of my life, aren’t you?”
“Yeah,” she said.
“Good. Forever doesn’t have a thing on me, babe.”
I touched her face and kissed her.
“Get a room, old man!”
The skateboard kids laughed as they hurried off.
“Did they just call me old?” I whispered.
“Yeah.”
“You know I can kick their ass, right?”
“I know, Liam. No bar fights tonight. Or teenager fights.”
“I’m not that old,” I said. “I will chase them down.”
“You can do that,” Emily said. She moved to her toes and kissed my ear. “Or you can come home with me and I’ll let you take advantage of me.”
“Will you wear nothing but a guitar?” I asked.
“I’d rather just wear you,” she said.
I shut my eyes and gritted my teeth.
Fuck, forever was going to be amazing with her, wasn’t it?
Epilogue
(Emily)
“Is this for real?” Carla asked as she looked around the stone walled apartment.
“It’s real,” I said.
“And it’s ours?” Faye asked.
“For now,” I said. “I mean, unless we can’t pay the rent. I got us a deal.”
“How?” Carla asked. “This is a fuck place.”
“A what?” I asked.
“You fucked someone to get this place,” she said.
“I hope not… my brother-in-law got us this place.”
“Oh, kinky,” Faye said. “You fucked your brother-in-law?”
“No!” I yelled. “Dan has some deal with the building. Everything is paid up for six months. The walls are all stone and basically soundproof. We can do whatever we want. I figured we would just leave it all open like this. Throw some blankets and pillows down, you know? I was looking into that foam stuff to put on the walls for the sound and vocals… I mean, if we wanted to record music too.”
“Robin is going to lose her mind,” Faye said.
“About that,” I said. “I kind of texted her.”
“You did?” Carla asked.
A second later, there was a knock at the door.
When I opened it, Robin stood there.
I let out a cry and looked at her stomach.
“Don’t say it,” she said. “If one more person says I popped I will scream.”
“You look beautiful,” I said. “You’re glowing, Robin.”
“Thanks,” she said.
She came into the apartment.
Faye cheered for Robin’s belly.
Carla…
“You popped,” she said. “I don’t care. I’ll say it. And, hey, how’s pregnancy sex?”
“Good to see you too, Carla,” Robin said.
“Listen,” I said. “I want the four of us to be here. In this. We have a chance to write music and record it. If it sounds good enough, Ernie said he has friends that can get us into a real studio. Robin should be part of it.”
“I can’t do shows,” she said. “Or I shouldn’t do shows.”
“You tell us what you want to do,” I said. “I just don’t want you left out.”
“Look at how fucking cool this woman is,” Faye said. “She gets us a free apartment. Her super-hot guy does everything to make sure we can record stuff. And her first instinct is to call Robin.”
“That’s why we love her,” Carla said.
“This is pretty cool,” Robin said. “I could use time out of the apartment. Fritz won’t stop talking about all the ways the baby can get hurt. He wants to put metal bars over the windows. I think he thinks the baby is going to come out and just start walking. Or sticking its tongue into an outlet…”
“Tell him to stick his tongue somewhere and shut up,” Carla said.
“I second that,” Faye said.
“I third it,” I said.
“Emily, you wild one,” Carla said. “Please tell me you have the hottest guy in the world and his tongue is like a built-in sex toy…”
“I hate you,” Faye said.
“What?” I asked. “Dozer doesn’t…”
“He does,” Faye said. “But, you know, it’s like… color in the lines, dude… you know?”
“No,” I said.
“He licks my legs,” Faye said. “My clit is not at my inner thigh.”
“You poor thing,” Carla said. “I’ll get you one of those pointers… or a laser pen. You can just point to your clit.”
“Maybe he’ll act like a cat to the laser pen,” Robin said. “Attack where the red dot is…”
I snorted and laughed so hard I had to sit down.
All I pictured was Dozer - this gigantic hulk of muscle - prancing on all fours like a cat, with his ass in the air, wiggling, chasing a laser pointer around.
We all ended up on the floor laughing.
I suggested we sing something.
Robin said she was hungry for pizza.
And none of us were going to argue with a pregnant woman.
