How to Have Your Boss's Secret Baby - London Casey Page 0,107

four in the morning.

I had to leave in an hour to drive back to the city to make an eight o’clock meeting.

Amelia needed to feed again at five.

This time I would make sure Maya was awake so she didn’t have a spill again.

I killed off that hour wandering through the apartment, thinking about work and life.

Maya shuffled out of the bedroom at five to go into Amelia’s room, and I followed.

I carried Amelia to her and got on one knee and watched Amelia and Maya together.

“Hey,” Maya whispered. “Remember the first week when she tried to latch to your nipple?”

I smiled. “That was a weird feeling. I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Yeah. Now you know what it’s like.”

“I’m not rough, am I?”

“Only when I tell you to be rough.”

“You mean only when I decide to be rough,” I said.

“Sure, Cole, whatever you say.”

I started to stand and kissed Maya’s cheek.

I kissed Amelia’s soft head and smiled.

I shut my eyes and inhaled her smell.

Amelia grabbed for my cheek and it almost brought me to tears.

I looked at Maya. “We’re going to get married, right?”

“Are you proposing?”

“It’s probably the worst kind, but what if I am?”

“I expected something bigger from you,” she said. “I’m disappointed.”

“I’ll try harder next time,” I said.

I fully stood up and Maya looked up at me. “You know I will marry you, right?”

“I know.”

“And it’ll mostly be for your money.”

“I know,” I said again. “I have to get ready to go.”

“Have a good day, Cole.”

“Love you, Maya.”

“Love you too.”

As I passed the changing table, I saw a onesie laid out.

I shook my head.

“Maya. Can you tell Bev to stop making clothes for our daughter?”

“Why?” Maya asked with a laugh.

I held up the onesie.

Mom’s Boss Didn’t Pull Out.

“I think it’s funny,” Maya said. “And it’s true.”

“Yeah, it’s something,” I said.

I looked at Maya and Amelia one last time before leaving.

I thought about them on the entire ride to the city.

I was meeting Lincoln at his apartment before we were going to meet with some software company. I stayed somewhat busy. Fatherhood came first. Making Maya come was second.

When the car stopped outside Lincoln’s building, I stepped out and smelled the city air.

I went into the building and rode the elevator to the second to last top floor.

The expensive part of the building.

As I walked down the hallway toward Lincoln’s apartment, I saw his door open.

Out stepped a woman in a t-shirt and a dress.

I froze in place.

It was obviously one of Lincoln’s t-shirts because it was big enough to go over the dress.

The dress was a deep, red color.

Her hair looked half styled.

Obviously I was witnessing a walk of shame.

When she looked at me, she stopped and smiled.

I showed my hands. “No judgement. I would run too if I woke up next to Lincoln.”

“I won’t be running too far,” she said.

“Why’s that?” I asked.

She showed me her hands.

Then she pointed to her left hand.

A big, fat diamond ring was on her ring finger.

“Lincoln and I got engaged at his brother’s wedding.”

I regretted not scouting things first.

I knew some of the names of the bridesmaids. And I knew some faces.

But when it came to Levi’s life and my life mixing together, the only thing we had in common was we had the same parents.

Meaning I didn’t know much about Karen’s life - nor did I really give a shit either.

In this case, however, I mentally slapped myself.

The ride to the wedding venue was lonely.

I had a big backseat all to myself.

The more I looked at the other side of the seat empty, the more I realized I messed this whole thing up.

I was the best man.

I had taken on everything from Levi’s side, but I never extended myself across the aisle.

I could have met the bridesmaids. I could have planted those early seeds.

I knew damn well at least one or two of them were secretly jealous that Karen was getting married. And, hey, Levi was a good looking guy.
