college. Someone who is good at their job…”

Blaire finally interrupts me. “It doesn’t matter what everyone else thinks, Kim. You should do what makes you happy. If being a mom makes you happy, then you’ve already got that one in the bag.”

I smile, stroking my belly affectionately.

“Yeah but doing this alone was never a part of those plans.”

“You’re not going to be alone; you’ll see, Kim. You’ve got it all wrong.” She’s smiling, but I don’t mind. At least she’s managed to make me feel a little better about myself.

Last night, we stayed up late watching movies and eating junk food. Today, I wake up in Blaire’s spare bedroom feeling hungover even though I haven’t touched a drop of alcohol since I found out about the pregnancy.

I take a long shower, change into a comfortable cotton maxi dress, and wait for Blaire to emerge from her room.

“You look great!” she declares, admiring my dress.

“I haven’t started showing yet, but I’ve bought a couple of comfy clothes just in anticipation of it.”

“The turquoise really brings out the green of your eyes,” she adds.

We drink some smoothies Blaire prepares while I cook up some eggs, then we’re off to the resort.

“I’m actually looking forward to this. Thank you so much,” I tell her in the car.

“You don’t need to thank me. I most definitely needed the break, and I wouldn’t have had the chance to take one if it wasn’t for you,” she replies.

“Me and my surprise pregnancy!”

We both laugh. I’m glad I am slowly getting to the stage where I can talk about this baby with a laugh and a smile. The last thing I want is for my child to grow up surrounded by gloom and negativity.

I play with the edges of my dress, trying to hold back the words that I actually want to say.

“So…has he contacted you? Have you heard from him or anything?” I ask, finally giving in to temptation. I’m trying my best to appear as nonchalant as I can, even though I know Blaire can see right through me.

“Who?” she asks. Come on, who are we kidding here?

When I don’t reply, she turns to me, and I roll my eyes at her.

“Are you asking if I’ve heard from Kirk?”

“We left things very abruptly. The last time we spoke was at my apartment that night. He knew I quit the job because he saw my box from the office. I’m just wondering if he reached out to you. About finding a replacement for me at work.” I’ve spoken too quickly and used too many words. I’m feeling anxious to hear her response.

A part of me hopes that she has spoken to him and she’s just chosen not to tell me about it. That would be reasonable enough. Maybe she’s just trying to protect me from all the things he’s said to her about me.

Blaire drums her fingers on the steering wheel as she drives.

“No, he never reached out to me about you or a new position,” she finally replies.

I notice how she’s avoiding my eyes. Is she trying to spare my feelings still?

“Okay, I guess he’s just happy he doesn’t need to deal with my mess,” I comment. Blaire is surprisingly silent. She usually has a lot to say on such subjects, but today, she doesn’t.

We drive through the lush driveway of the resort, and I can already feel myself relaxing. Yes. This is exactly what I need.

I just hope I come out of this place a changed woman.

The level of luxury with which we are greeted at the resort reminds me of the hotel we stayed at in Vegas. I feel self-conscious in my surroundings at first, but Blaire soon makes me comfortable.

We are greeted with tall glasses of sparkling cucumber water, which is refreshing, then we’re shown to the spa section.

“This is fabulous!” I say, and Blaire giggles as she leads the way.

Sheila is our host who shows us around the place. The decor is like a Zen garden, complete with koi ponds and small indoor waterfalls. I am instantly feeling peaceful and tranquil. There’s soothing music playing in the background and we’re asked to slip into fluffy slippers as we walk around.

“Can we live here?” Blaire jokes with Sheila, who supplies us with a laugh as she hands over our robes.

“Feel free to take your time, ladies. There’s no rush. You can make use of our relaxing pods. Have a nap if you like. We can bring in some food and drinks too,”
