to hire her permanently. Deal?”
I clench my jaw. I don’t like being backed into a corner like this, but I get the feeling Blaire isn’t going to let this drop if I don’t agree.
Besides, two weeks will give me time to find Evelyn’s real replacement.
“Deal,” I reply.

Kim
I catch Blaire’s eye as she weaves around the groups of people and the tables, making her way towards me.
I’m a little embarrassed by my outburst last weekend. I was feeling particularly low after my visit home. Every time I come face-to-face with my parents, I realize how disappointed they would be in me if they knew the truth. If they knew how low my real prospects are.
I’m a college graduate with decent grades. This country is filled with others like me. Besides, the truth that I’m actually hiding from them, from Blaire and everybody else—is that I don’t want that life. The career-driven rat race. I want something else. A life I would be ashamed to admit aloud.
Blaire comes up to the table with our drinks and puts them down.
“At one point, I thought I would have to flash the bartender,” she says with a laugh as she sits. I laugh too, taking a sip of my martini.
“So, listen to this, I found you the perfect job.”
I look up at her sharply. I didn’t think she actually took it seriously. That she was going to start looking for a position for me.
“Blaire…I really wasn’t expecting…”
She waves a hand in front of my face.
“It doesn’t matter what you were expecting. I found you one anyway.”
“What do you mean by found? I still have to formally apply for the position, right? Go for an interview and all that?”
“The job is yours. I know the man who is going to be your boss.”
I gulp nervously.
I have never had a job before. Not a real one, anyway. All my life has been spent on education. I have never had any real-world experiences. The thought of having a boss makes me nervous.
“You okay, Kim?” Blaire asks when she notices how the color has drained from my cheeks.
“I’m fine. I just didn’t think it would happen so quickly. In fact, I wanted to apologize for my outburst that day. I was feeling frustrated and I didn’t mean to take it out on you.”
“Don’t worry about it. I get it. Things are hard and competitive out there. You’re feeling the pressure.”
“You didn’t have to find me a job, Blaire. I don’t expect any favors.”
“It’s not a favor. You’re the perfect fit for this role.”
“What kind of a job is it?”
“Administrative assistant to a high-profile investment banker. It’s a high-stakes, supercharged environment I think you will thrive in.”
I’m staring at her like I’ve been slapped.
“This must be a joke, right? What makes you think I am remotely suited to this role? I have no experience as an assistant or an admin, and especially not in a place like the one you’re describing.”
Blaire is smiling at me. She tilts her head to one side and examines me closely.
“You just have to give this a shot, Kim, just one chance.”
I’m already shaking my head. In disbelief and disagreement. Why would I give it a shot when I’m a hundred percent sure of my failure?
“Just take a look at it, Kim,” Blaire says as she slips the piece of paper towards me.
“Are you trying to tempt me?” I ask, and she smirks.
“I just want you to see what this job could mean.”
I roll my eyes at her but look at the paper anyway.
Okay. I see what she means. This is…unbelievable. More money than I ever expected from a first-time job. Perks and benefits. The best I was hoping for was being able to secure a decent internship.
“Are you serious?” I ask, looking up at her. Blaire shrugs.
“The job is yours if you want it. Well, I’ve arranged for a two-week trial given your experience, but I’m sure that you’ll prove yourself and secure a permanent position.”
I put the paper down and sigh.
“I don’t want to be greedy,” I admit.
“But you need the money, right? You need the experience too. This would look good on your CV, no doubt,” she continues.
I bite down on my lip. I can’t shake off the feeling that there is something else at work here.
“What’s the catch?” I ask, and Blaire smiles. It’s like she was waiting for me to ask this question. “There is a catch, right? It can’t be this simple.”
