After the day they all threatened to kill me if I didn’t treat Mia right, The Holy Trinity had kept their word and hadn’t interfered in my courtship. However, they summoned Mia more often, to the point that she didn’t quiver and quake whenever they were around. It also took Mia two months before she professed her love for me.
We had gotten married the day after.
Life went on as usual, except that someone else had been assigned to Mia and I ended up joining Sal Benetti’s crew fulltime. It made sense with what Mia did for a living. While I helped dispose of bodies, Mia worked to cover our tracks. Mia was allowed a year-long internship at one of the best chemical bio engineering firms in the country, and after that she went to work for Ciro. She worked on solutions that could eliminate trace evidence, such as blood, sweat, etc. At first, I thought she was going to balk at working for the Mob, but she explained that she wasn’t a hypocrite. She couldn’t look at the men she loved and respected, and then turn her nose up at what we did for a living.
I snorted. “That’s a given.”
She reached for a water in the fridge. “You’d think they’d mellow with age, but they don’t.” Luca, Ciro, and Phoenix were nearing their fifties, and you’d never know it. They were still bloodthirsty bastards. “I was also told today was my last day.” Mia worked with chemicals, and no matter how much they spent on the best of protective gear, Ciro was godfather to both our kids, so he didn’t take chances.
“Good,” I commented as I picked Niro up and walked into the kitchen. “I miss my girls.”
“Yeah, Mommy,” Niro chimed in. “We miss our girls.” In that moment, I knew if I died tomorrow, I’d be on my way to Hell knowing perfection. My life was perfection.
