down."
She pulled her hand out of her purse and pointed the pistol at him. He remained in front of her.
Tarkio members stood from each side of him, moving closer. He raised his fingers at his side, warning them all to stand back.
"Put the gun away," he said.
"I'm leaving."
"You're staying here." He looked in her eyes. "We'll talk."
"I'm leaving, for real. Don't try and stop me. You've already said enough, and it was mostly lies." Her hand shook, making her aim unsteady.
"Oh, my God, Twyla." Angie rushed to her side.
Ringtail grabbed Twyla's sister around her waist, holding her back. These two women were going to be the death of him.
"What are you doing with a gun?" said Angie.
"I'm going to leave, and if anyone stops me, I'll shoot them." She stepped back toward the door, swinging her gaze wildly around the room.
"Is this about what we talked about earlier?" Angie fought Ringtail's hold on her. "Don't be stupid. Put the gun down. You're going to kill someone."
Twyla laughed harshly, angrily. "Stupid was coming here and believing him. I'm not going to let anyone use me."
That insult was aimed at Whip. He caught Priest's gaze and lifted his chin. He had everything under control. All he needed to do was talk to Twyla.
Priest walked to him. Several of his MC brothers jumped to get between Priest and Twyla, protecting their president from getting shot.
"Let her go," said Priest.
Whip sucked hard on his teeth, growing frustrated more than angry. "Can't do that."
All he had to do was talk to her. She'd understand.
"We've got bigger problems than worrying about a woman pulling a weapon inside the clubhouse." Priest moved away from Whip.
Twyla took his distraction to open the door. Without turning around, she stepped outside and let the door close. He flinched.
He'd explained how much he wanted her with him. Hell, he'd shown her how much he wanted her. She seemed like a woman who could handle living at the clubhouse.
Angie groaned, pushing away from Ringtail, and almost fell in the process. Whip watched her run to the door, fling it open, and disappear with her sister.
The best thing for Twyla would be to run far away. Get away from Missoula. Get away from Big. Get away from him.
But, he knew her well enough to know she wouldn't leave her job. She'd stay in Missoula, and doing so, would get her hurt.
"Fuck," he mumbled, striding to the door.
Outside, he looked to his left, where she always parked her car, and found the spot empty. Striding over to his motorcycle, he had a good idea where she'd go. At least eventually.
If she couldn't find a room at one of the motels, she'd park off the interstate at the base of the mountain by the river. The woman was a survivor.
He wasn't worried about her taking care of herself.
He was worried about what other people could do to her.
"It's all your fault," yelled Angie.
Twyla's sister walked back from the sidewalk in front of the clubhouse, fit to be tied. Dysfunctional families weren't his specialty. He failed to understand why Angie couldn't get along with Twyla or why she suddenly stuck up for her.
"If you would've let her stay with you, none of this would be happening. Your sister would be home safe." He put on his helmet and threw his leg over the seat of his Harley.
"Don't tell me how to treat my sister." Angie planted her hands on her hips.
"Jesus." Ringtail grabbed Angie and pulled her away from Whip. "Knock it off before Whip brings the whole clubhouse down on you."
It was on the tip of his tongue to tell Ringtail to control his woman. But he couldn't even control Twyla.
He started his Harley and roared out of the parking lot. Missoula wasn't that big. He'd find Twyla.
He had to find her.
He just didn't know what he was going to do with her after he found her.
Chapter 21
Twyla
The match in Twyla's hand broke in half. She threw the matchbook on the pile of wood within the circle of river rocks. There was no reason to have a fire.
It was almost two o'clock in the morning.
She needed to sleep but couldn't force herself to go sit in her car. The surge of excess energy after her fight at the clubhouse with Whip left her antsy.
Enough time had passed since the last time she had to seek a motel room, she thought there would be a vacancy at one of them. At Motel 6, she'd concluded the
