His Hush-Hush Baby - Holly Rayner Page 0,50
already vanished from the foyer.
In the living room, he sat on the couch, laptop in front of him, typing away.
“What did you find?” Energy thrummed through Kai, making it impossible to sit or stand still. Instead he paced the room, fist pressed to his chin.
“Oh, boy, Mr. Weiss.” RJ chuckled low in his throat. “I hope you’re ready for this.”
That made Kai stop walking. “What?”
RJ stopped typing and sat up straighter. “Those emails you wanted me to locate? I found them, all right. They were sent from and to your email.” He jabbed a finger at Kai.
Kai frowned. “No. I went through my emails. I would have seen something like that.”
“Not if someone hacked your account and then deleted the emails.”
Heat filled Kai’s chest. “Who was it?”
“In addition to actually sending emails from your name, other email addresses were hacked, with a cloaked IP.” RJ laughed again. “She gave it a good try. Not good enough, of course.”
“She?”
Kai’s mind raced. Most of his business rivals were men. What “she” was RJ talking about?
“Here they are. If you wanna take a look.” RJ spun the laptop around.
Kai rushed to the coffee table and, dropping on his knees in front of it, leaned into the computer. Sure enough, there were the emails, ones sent from and to Kai’s email discussing stock prices.
His hands curled into fists. Someone had masqueraded as him and given clients varying prices for the same stock.
“I haven’t talked to any of these clients in months,” he said.
“And who knows if they even got the chance to read these emails? They were deleted from their accounts almost as quickly as they were received.”
Kai stared at him. This was nonsensical.
“Why?” he asked. “If someone wanted to make me look bad, how does that add up? If there are no emails…”
“Our hacker wanted it to look like you regretted what you did and went in there and deleted the emails. Still, it’s incriminating, deleted emails or not.”
“I don’t know how to hack.”
“But you know someone who does,” RJ said wryly.
Kai released a string of expletives.
“It’s clever,” RJ said. “Almost. I mean, she didn’t get away with it, so it’s not by any means genius.”
“Tell me who did this.” Kai’s heart beat so loud he barely heard his own voice. “Do I know her?”
RJ made a sympathetic face. “Oh, you know her, all right.”
He spun the laptop back around, opened a new application, and turned the screen back to Kai. “Sorry, man.”
From the middle of the screen, Brie Guzzo smiled at Kai.
Everything went out of focus. Kai gripped the edges of the coffee table.
“Are you sure?” he asked through gritted teeth.
RJ pursed his lips. “Sure as I am that the Matrix is a real thing and we’re in it.”
“What?”
RJ shrugged. “Yeah. I’m sure.”
Letting go of the coffee table, Kai dropped back onto the carpet. He’d already released nearly every cussword he knew, and now he was speechless.
Brie had betrayed him.
But why?
His teeth ground together, and his hands fisted, nails digging into his palms. He’d trusted her with his company, and this is what she did?
Was she seeking to usurp him? To have him arrested because she had some kind of personal vendetta that he knew nothing about?
“Sorry again,” RJ said. “I know she’s your wingwoman.”
“Was.” Kai closed his eyes and saw red. “She was.”
He opened his eyes and focused on RJ. There would be time for wallowing later. Right then he needed to shut this situation down before Brie did any more damage.
“Is there anything else I need to know?” he asked.
“I didn’t find anything else.”
“Thank you.” Kai shook his hand, retrieved a bonus for RJ in the form of cash that he kept in his safe, and saw the other man out.
First things first, he called his lawyer. After that, he called the FBI. Well, not exactly.
He called Damian.
“Buddy!” Damian answered. “Looks like you’re doing good on your promise to get in touch more. A little early for my taste, but okay. I still like it.”
“Damian, listen.” Kai sat on the edge of his couch, cradling his pounding head with one hand. “I want to tell you something because I need your advice, but it needs to remain confidential. If you can help, I’d really appreciate it.”
“Okay.” Damian’s voice turned serious. “One second.”
There was the sound of a door closing on his end.
“Go ahead,” Damian said.
Kai spilled everything. Diane’s pregnancy. What she’d said about the emails. Even RJ’s digging and discovering it was Brie behind it all.
He knew he was taking
