Then came the chaps and the boots. As I slowly got undressed, I realized Jane was behind me, watching. I sat on the top step, removed the last boot, and set it aside. Then I waved her over.
She walked up the steps timidly but with a smile on her face. I motioned to her foot and she held it out for me. Placing one hand on her heel and the other on the toe of the boot, I shifted it, and it came loose. I looked up at her without moving my head and saw her biting her bottom lip as I slowly undressed her feet.
When the boot finally came off, she wiggled her toes in the sock and set it down. I grabbed the other boot and removed it as well, taking my time and giving into the intimate touch of her soft ankles as I pulled the boot away from her heel.
“There,” I said as I set the boots down. “Now the chaps.”
As I helped her undress, we maintained eye contact, and the heat between us was so intense I felt like the air was sparkling under the electricity of it. “Just so you know,” I said, breaking the increasing sexual tension, “the brothers can be a bit of a handful.”
She laughed and curled her knees to her chest, setting her hands behind her to balance her. Her voice was melodic and her smile entrancing, and I had to stop myself from pulling her into my lap right there.
“I think if I can herd cattle, I can deal with a few Montgomery brothers,” she said.
“There are eight of us,” I said.
“Eight?” she asked, grinning deviously. “Well, now I get to find out if I picked the right one.”
We both laughed and she scooted closer to me. Wrapping one arm through mine, she laid her head on my shoulder and we watched the stars come out for a few minutes. It was cold but gorgeous, and the crisp air seemed to refresh me, despite how tired my muscles were.
“Why don’t we go inside and find something to eat?” I asked.
She agreed and we got up, not without a little bit of groaning, and went inside. I led her to the kitchen. Colt was there. He’d grabbed a shower and changed into sweatpants, and he was looking in the fridge already.
“Oh, hey, Jane,” he said, his eyes darting over to me. “Staying for dinner?”
“Maybe a little longer,” she said. “If there are no objections.”
Colt grinned. “As long as Rubin isn’t here, I’m not going to complain.”
“So, what have we got?” I asked. “They leave anything good for us?”
“We’ve got some meatloaf, mac and cheese, and biscuits but not a lot,” Colt said. “They didn’t figure we’d be back until tomorrow, I guess.”
“Oh well,” I said. “We can make do. Nuke ‘em.”
“Better yet, you nuke the food,” Colt said. “I’ll get us all some drinks.”
I pointed at my brother in agreement, and he went to the liquor cabinet while I took the food to the microwave. Jane made herself comfortable at the kitchen table and watched us prepare our quick dinner in what at least looked like amused silence. When we had food and drinks in front of us, we dug in, devouring our meals quickly.
“This house is amazing,” Jane said between mouthfuls of a pumpkin pie Colt had found deep in the freezer. “I’ve only seen part of it, but it’s so pretty. It’s just you boys?”
