on?”

She wasn’t sure how he was so blasé about his parents’ obvious disregard for the sanctity of marriage. JJ would go so far as to say it didn’t bother him. Her outlook wasn’t much different, she figured. Her parents had made it until Jeremy killed himself. They hadn’t been strong enough to last after that. The blame—on each other, on her, but never on Jeremy—had gotten the best of them all and her family structure had crumbled.

Baz reached over, turned her chin toward him. With his fingers lightly grazing her jaw, he kissed her. And right then and there, JJ forgot all about … everything.

“It’s gonna be damn hard to keep my hands off you at the office,” he whispered as he pulled her back, his upper body leaning over hers as he tugged the sheet down. “I’ll be thinkin’ about you just like this.”

“Like what?” she asked, staring up into his ridiculously handsome face, the tousled, dark blond hair, those teal-blue eyes.

“Soft and warm. Naked.” He dragged his lips along her jaw, his hand skimming her belly and pausing when she spread her legs. “Wet.”

JJ moaned when he dipped two fingers inside her.

“Never get enough,” he mumbled as he fingered her.

She turned her head, found his mouth with her own. The kiss was slow, a contradiction to the way his fingers began fucking into her, deeper, faster. JJ’s breaths labored, her chest rising and falling as the waves of undeniable pleasure crashed through her. Her hips began to rock, meeting him thrust for thrust as she chased the release that would leave her reeling.

“Come for me, JJ,” Baz growled softly. “Come for me so I can fuck you.”

In any other context, any other cadence, those words would’ve been crass. Coming from Baz, said in that deep, raspy baritone … they were enough to trigger her, to send her spiraling.

She had no idea when he’d donned the condom, nor did she care. In one quick shift, he was over her, in her, sliding in deep. Her body acclimated to the exquisite intrusion when she wrapped her legs around his hips. JJ dug her ankles into his ass, urging him to go deeper. He gave her exactly what she needed, their bodies moving in a rhythm that seemed natural, as though they’d been meant for this.

“Oh, God,” she cried out, an orgasm taking her completely by surprise, the fierce sensations shredding her as they flowed up from her core, through the rest of her, and out through her fingers.

Baz grunted, lifting his upper body, staring down into her face, punching his hips forward.

Another orgasm stole through her, smaller than the first but no less lethal.

“Fuck yes … JJ,” Baz growled, his body stilling as he crested that hill right along with her.

Chapter Eighteen

Brantley woke with a crick in his neck and a mild headache coming on. He’d known he would. Sleeping in a vehicle wasn’t something he’d done in quite some time now, and his body had gotten used to the comfort of a bed. And the warm, hard body that shared that bed.

Last night, he’d slept alone in the front seat of an SUV, which explained the dull throb in his skull. Not a migraine, thank God, but still painful.

“Got any ibuprofen?” he asked as he pushed the button to bring his chair upright, pulling his sunglasses off his face and setting them on the dash. “Any sign of them?”

“Yes to the meds,” Reese answered, motioning toward the floor.

Brantley glanced down, saw the small bottle sitting in the cubby at the base of the center console.

“Come prepared, do you?”

“Figured you might need it. Also brought your migraine meds. Just in case.”

Of course he had. Because that was what Reese did. He was the caretaker. In Brantley’s life, that role had always been filled by himself. Well, once he’d graduated from high school, anyway. Before that, his mother had been the nurturing sort, taking care of the house and all the kids. But since the first day of boot camp, Brantley had been looking after himself and he would admit, he was rather shitty at it. He never would’ve thought to bring any medicine.

It was nice to have someone else backing him up on that front.

“As for our suspects, Collins left about half an hour ago. Still no sign of the brother.” Reese glanced over. “Figured we could wait to see if Collins intended to come back or if he’s on duty today.”

“He is,” Brantley confirmed. “I called
