Hello My Angel - Sue Brown Page 0,23
Keep us posted of any packages. Don’t open them until you get here.”
Josh hugged Rick. “Give Linda a kiss from me.”
“I’ll do that,” he promised.
In ten minutes the office was empty, leaving Cal and Josh alone again.
Cal looked at Josh. “Just you and me, Angel.”
“Wanna take me over the table, big boy?” Josh fluttered his lashes at Cal.
“If footage from this office didn’t go straight to a security office, I’d have you in a heartbeat,” Cal promised.
Josh sighed. “Don’t tell me. CDR?”
Cal’s dimples told him everything.
“They do know about us.”
“Knowing and seeing are two different things, my angel. CDR don’t need to see their senior partner take an old employee over the desk.”
“I hope this is visual only.”
“You’re safe. Silent movie only.”
Josh pulled a face. “Disappointed, but safe.”
“I’ll make it up to you, I promise.” Cal tangled his fingers in Josh’s. “When this is all over I’ll take you away for a weekend, tie you down, and fuck you through the mattress.”
“You’d better,” Josh said grumpily. “Let’s review the CCTV footage from home.”
Josh brought the footage onto the smartboard. The resolution was poor, but it was enough to see someone in a baseball cap put the envelope through the door.
“It looks like a woman,” Cal said.
“I can’t be sure. I can’t see their face clearly enough. They’re wearing gloves though.”
“Yeah, they are.” Cal expelled an annoyed breath.
Then Josh leaned forward. “Is that hair?” He stopped the footage and pointed to a swathe of black down their back.
Cal squinted. “It looks like it.”
“That’s Chyna. It has to be.”
“But why take that risk?” Cal asked.
“She knows we’re not at home,” Josh pointed out. “There was little risk of being caught.”
“Why take the risk at all? Why not get one of her minions to do it?”
“Has she got any minions left? Billy Wilde is dead. Lucy Raymond is dead. Who else has she got?”
Cal grimaced. “We don’t know, do we? We still don’t know who’s a traitor and who isn’t.”
“Mullins has got to be on the dark side,” Josh insisted.
“Just because you don’t like him, doesn’t mean he’s corrupt.”
“Mullins is a weasel, and what about that Seagull dude?”
Cal looked at him, confused. “Seagull?”
“The government spook.”
“You mean Herring? Graham Herring?”
Josh waved a hand. “Seagull, herring, it’s all the same.”
Cal shook his head. “I wonder about you sometimes. But, to answer your question, I don’t think he’s one of Chyna’s minions. It’s not unusual for the head of the agency to be talking to government officials.”
Josh grunted. He wasn’t convinced but he could conduct his own investigation if Cal wasn’t prepared to consider the possibility.
“You can check him out,” Cal said mildly. “Just keep it low-key.”
Josh beamed at him. His Charlie knew him so well. His phone rang. “It’s Gil. Hey.”
“We’ve got a package.”
Josh mouthed the news to Cal, whose face darkened.
“Anything else out of place?”
Josh heard a rumble of conversation, before Gil said, “No. We’ll go to the hotel to collect the package that was left for me.”
“Get back here as fast as you can.”
“Will do.” Gil disconnected the call.
“That’s at least three fingers,” Cal said. “Who knows where else she’s delivered to.”
Josh snapped his fingers. “Let’s talk to Stephen. Mullins might have been one of the deliveries.”
“You do that. I’m going to talk to Dominic.”
“Send him my love,” Josh trilled.
“If I didn’t know you better I’d swear you had a hard-on for Dominic.”
“You never know, if it wasn’t for you, I might have made a play.”
Cal winked at him. “His wife would have killed you.”
Josh grinned as he scrolled down his list of contacts to find Stephen’s number. He waited for him to answer and was on the point of giving up when there was a hushed, “Hello?”
“Hey, Stephen.”
“Mullins said if you called I should tell you to call him immediately.”
“So you’ve told me,” Josh said indifferently. “Have you received a brown envelope?”
“Yes.”
A very wary affirmative.
“Are you on your own?”
“No.”
“Security?”
“Yes.”
“Have you opened the envelope?”
“Yes.”
“A finger.”
“Yes.”
“What did he do?”
Stephen’s voice dropped to barely a whisper. “I don’t know but suits have been in his office all morning.”
“It’s her office, not his,” Josh corrected. The thought of Mullins taking over the office permanently made him feel sick. “Have the police been called?”
“I don’t know.”
“Okay. If you get another envelope, text yes to me.”
“Did you—?”
“Yeah, and we know of two more. You’re not to tell him that.”
“Okay.”
Josh could hear the desperation in Stephen’s voice. “You need us, call me.”
“Got a job for me?”
Josh snorted. “I’ll talk to the boss.”
“Do that. Fuck. I’ve got to go.”
Cal was
