Heart Of Darkness (Transfusion Saga #10) - Stephanie Hudson Page 0,41

asked seeming now as if he was insulted, so I quickly back-tracked.

“Are you kidding me, I would be a nightmare for you.”

“How so?” he asked again and with more patience this time, especially after going with the whole, ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ thing.

“Well, you saw me getting off your dragon, think of that as small taste of the clumsiness my boyfriend faces on a day to day basis and you will understand why my being here for too long is not a good idea,” I admitted making his lips twitch.

“Because you’re clumsy?” he enquired with mirth.

“Yes, and you have a lot of nice things, half of which I am sure are breakable and not Fae proof.”

“I am afraid you lost me, little Princess, for we are all Fae here.” On hearing this, I felt like smacking my forehead and cursing my shortened use of my middle name, Faith.

“Ah, yeah, that… I think now is the time to let you know we have something in common, as my name is Fae, well, it’s Amelia Faith, but people call me Fae… for short and yes, before you say it, the irony isn’t lost on me either.” At this he burst out laughing and told me,

“Well, I will admit, little Amelia Faith, or Fae as you so sweetly named yourself, that you amuse me greatly and I do confess to looking forward to our time together whilst you are here,” he said kindly, making me have no choice but to move on with my next point.

“Ah, right, well about that, you see I am hoping that my not so subtle charms and all, will persuade you to help me.”

“Is that so… hmm, now I am intrigued as to know in what way do you think I could, help you that is?” he said still clearly amused with me.

“Well, as you know we got sent here by a witch and we are just trying to get back to my boyfriend’s realm.”

“And I wonder, if this boyfriend of yours is currently doing all he can to get you back?” the King asked and before I could focus too much on the strange question, I answered him without restraint,

“Oh, I know he is, as he would do anything.”

“Really, now that is interesting,” he said more to himself than to me. But again, it didn’t yet penetrate my mind deep enough to really ask why, not at first.

“Yeah, Lucius would stop at nothing to get me back and you see I have to get back before… wait, now why is that interesting?” I asked, finally having a bad feeling about this, and what was soon to realise was my runaway mouth!

“Because I need to know what your King would be willing to do to get you back.”

“Why do you need to know that… I thought… I thought you were going to help us?” I said stumbling on my words as that dread started to sink deeper and deeper into my chest.

“Oh, I am and soon, if what you say is true, we will all have what we want.”

“What do you mean?” He leant forward again, and this time his tone was less playful and more serious as he started to confirm my worst fears.

“What I mean, little human, is, if what you say is true, then your King will give me whatever I want to get back his intended Queen… or should I say, who I want.”

“Who?” I questioned on a barely there whisper.

“Yes, who, for you should have realised by now that it wasn’t my brother who made a deal with your witch after all…”

This was when that dread doubled and was confirmed to be warranted when he finished that sentence and said…

“It was me.”

Now Children, Behave

The second I heard him admit this, a few things happened simultaneously, the first being me turning on my heel and making the first step forward in running from him. At the same time, the huge, colossal doors at the very end of the throne room echoed as they were forced open and three shifter brothers walked with purpose towards the throne. That was when I realised that shifting into their mythological beast wasn’t their only gift, as enhanced eyesight must have been another. I knew this when even from their distance away they could see the moment I was grabbed from behind and dragged up to the lap of the Dragon King.

Once there, I quickly found a hand collaring my throat and this was all that was needed
