Heart Of Darkness (Transfusion Saga #10) - Stephanie Hudson Page 0,21

do, and I just hoped that I had enough power to be able to do it, because over forty men were a lot more than the four I had knocked down the last time. But then I remembered the harpies that my power had managed to eradicate in one blow, and all I could hope for was that I could achieve the same thing again, only this time without the power of the Eye. There were just too many ways that this could go wrong, but it was only that one reason to try that was all I needed. All I needed to have me racing down the hill ready to take on an entire army of barbarians!

The dragon in the net rolled as streams of fire, ice and air were bursting from its mouths in a desperate attempt to escape. But this didn’t last long as I could see the problem for myself when its large body was being constricted, preventing their breathing. Because the net that was tightening around them, was doing so the more they moved and struggled, coiling around them as if the very net was alive.

“Oh, Hell no!” I snapped as I could feel the anger burning inside of me, and I let it grow with every second that I was forced to watch as the brothers struggled against their restraints. I let it fuel my instincts in getting there sooner, ignoring the pain in my muscles that were already aching from all of the walking we had just done. All that mattered was getting to them in time, as I saw the barbarians all point their weapons at the dragon who was at their mercy.

The closer I got, the more I could hear a strange language being spoken by them but then a buzzing vibration went through my head, penetrating my skull and bringing me to my knees with the power of it! Something about the sound of their voices had me cradling my head and trying to push past the pain that shot through my brain. Thankfully, it didn't last long, or I knew I wouldn’t have ended up being able to get back on my feet. Something I needed to do to make it the rest of the way to save them. I would have questioned what it had been, if hearing their voices being spoken now hadn’t started to morph into one I could understand, as if it was naturally being translated through my mind…

“I've never seen three heads on one dragon before,” one said, whilst another replied,

“You know what this means!”

“Three times the pay!” another shouted, and his answer to this was,

“The King’s bounty will be plentiful indeed!”

This was the tail end of a conversation that I could overhear as I got closer to them, until suddenly my approach was known.

“Look what we've got here then, lads.”

“Looks like our bonus came early with this little piece of fluff.” They sneered with yellow teeth grinning at me, and one even licked his lips as if he could already taste the spoils of their kill. But yet again, this was something that added to the anger inside me as I took a widened stance ready for the blast of power I could feel illuminating my veins.

“Oh, it's bonus time alright... it's just not one you’re expecting!” I said in a cocky way that spoke of the damage I was about to inflict. Then I thought of what made it happen the last time, as I held out my arms with my hands turned up with palms pointed to them ready for the blast of power to erupt like the Gods’ fury and then…

Nothing.

Nothing fucking happened!

Then I tried again, first lowering my arms and bringing them up quicker this time, as if I were trying to push my way against an invisible wall. But in the end, after five attempts, I just looked like an idiot, because nothing was happening other than the men now being half convinced I was crazy and the other half finding my actions an amusing sight.

“Gods be damn it! Work will you!” I said, shaking my hands as if this would kick start them into action. I didn't know what was happening or more to the fact, why it wasn't happening, and had to question was it because I was no longer in Hell?

I was no longer in a realm I… I belonged in?

I don't know where that thought had come from, but it was one that seemed
