to a series of rooms.” I motioned to the partially drawn map resting on the table before them and the miniatures placed in the hallway waiting to explore. “Vaeril listened at the first door and heard a scratching noise inside. You realize now you can hear the faint mewling of a cat. What do you do?”

Chapter Three

I pressed my fingers to my lips but was unable to stifle my giggles as Lee leaned over the table in an overtly sexual way toward an unimpressed Carson.

“I can make it worth your while.” Lee wiggled his eyebrows in clear suggestion.

As I’d learned over the course of the game, Lee was undoubtedly the hussy of the group. If there was a man or woman or orc that could be seduced, Lee was there to do the seducing.

“I’m a married man,” Carson said in a scandalized voice, playing the part of the guard.

After the party had rescued me from the dungeon below the manor, we’d explored a bit further, finding a few cultists and a single note. Upon returning to the main gathering, the host had quickly uncovered our deception and had called for the authorities. We’d made a break for it, but unluckily, Red had rolled a one on an acrobatics check and had tripped over his own shoes, landing face-first before the arriving guards.

Now in the local jail, it was up to us to rescue him. Well, it was up to Lee to seduce the guard so we could break him out. I’d sent Cynara in to comfort him since Red had looked like he was going to cry when Carson had described the guard taking him away. It was Cynara’s job to protect him and keep all the real bad guys away from him. It had worked. I smiled as I watched Red use his paladin miniature to pet the tiny black cat Carson had given to me.

“So am I, but my wife won’t mind,” Lee replied. “Come on. I bet you’re dying to know what I can do with my tail.”

I couldn’t remember the name of his race, but Lee was a blue devil-like creature with a long tail and dark horns. Honestly, I was a little in love with him.

Carson rolled his eyes as he laughed. “Roll a persuasion check.”

Lee picked up the single red twenty-sided die he had. “Come on, love machine. You can do it.”

I laughed as he shook the die between his hands. “You named your die the love machine?”

“Hey, if it works, it works,” he said shamelessly. “Come on, come on, give papa something good.”

Opening his hands, he tossed the die across the table. Reading the number, Lee jumped out of his chair in victory. “Yes! Natural twenty, baby!”

Everyone around the table cheered. Once we’d settled down, we all looked to Carson eagerly.

He sighed, glancing once to the left and then to his right. “Come with me.”

“Oh, baby, yes,” Lee said as he sat back down with obvious satisfaction.

“The guard and Vaeril round the corner into a small alley nearby for a bit of privacy, what are the rest of you doing?" Carson asked, looking around the table.

Before anyone could answer, an alarm sounded from Carson’s phone. “And that’s time, guys.”

I looked down at my phone and was surprised to see our three hours were already up.

“Really?” Red whined from the other side of the table, pouting at Carson. “But I’m still in jail.”

I understood his disappointed expression. I didn’t want to stop playing either.

“Yes,” Carson replied firmly as he closed his books and lowered the screen between himself and the rest of us. “Put your stuff away. Nate will be here soon to pick you up.”

Red perked up at that and started quickly putting his stuff away into his own little box. I guessed Nate was Red’s boyfriend or something.

Red picked up Cynara, and instead of handing her back to me, he looked over and clutched her to his chest. “Can I keep her with me? Just until next week,” he said before I could refuse. “So she can still protect me.”

Nodding, I placed my warlock figure into my box along with the dice I had borrowed. “Sure.”

“Thanks!” Red placed Cynara carefully into his box next to his miniature. “Now there’s no need to be scared. Cynara will protect you until the rest of the group rescues you next week.”

Watching everyone else around the table as I packed up, I waited for them to tease Red for his childish behavior, but no one said
