at the kitchen table. I hadn’t seen Mom’s car outside, which meant she was likely out shopping or visiting friends.
“Well, Hayley, when you screw up, you do it big,” I muttered to myself. Not that I would ever let my child feel unloved or unwanted. Unplanned as this pregnancy might be, I knew I’d love my baby with all my heart.
I placed a hand over my belly and wondered where Hawk was right then. What he was doing… I’d thought about asking Preacher if he knew how to contact him, but I always chickened out. He’d made it clear he didn’t want a kid with me. I didn’t imagine that would change just because he’d knocked me up. I’d been a one-night stand and nothing more.
I’d have to content myself with the memory of our one night together.

Hawk
I’d been in town two weeks and hadn’t found the fucker who was after my woman. And yeah, I considered Hayley mine, even if she didn’t want anything to do with me. Just seeing her again, even from a distance, made my chest ache. I wanted her more than anything, but not enough to force her to see me. She’d made her choice and I’d have to live with it.
Hayley hadn’t left her house much, not since the day I’d watched her brother drive her home in a police car. I didn’t know what was going on, but her dad had looked pissed as hell when he’d come home that night. I’d heard a lot of shouting and had nearly broken into the house to make sure Hayley was safe. I’d held back, but just barely.
The upside to her not leaving the house was that her stalker had to come to her there. He couldn’t find her around town anymore. Which was possibly the only reason I saw him lurking in the wooded area next to the house. In the dark, I’d nearly missed the shadow leaning against a tree. I motioned with my head, making sure Snake, Grimm, and Warden spotted the asshole. Since I knew Chief Daniels and his family were all home, I knew it wasn’t any of them. No, this had to be the fucker scaring my woman.
The four of us fanned out, approaching the man from all sides, but clinging to the darkness so he wouldn’t spot us. It wouldn’t be the first time we’d had to sneak up on someone, and I doubted it would be the last. I knew Snake had at least one weapon ready, Grimm had a 9mm in his hand, and Warden was armed to the teeth. I pulled out the knife I kept sheathed in my boot and crept up behind the man.
He didn’t even hear me as I stepped up and placed the blade against his throat. He tensed and cursed, but didn’t move.
“What do you want with Hayley?” I asked.
“You’re the one who got her dirty.” The man’s voice sounded like he’d been swallowing gravel. He was wire thin and smelled like cigarettes and alcohol. How the hell had this man ever found her?
“How do you know Hayley?” I demanded, pressing the blade a little tighter.
Snake approached from the front, with Grimm and Warden coming in from either side. The man tensed further when he realized we had him surrounded. I had a feeling we wouldn’t get much out of him, and since the cops were looking for him, I couldn’t exactly make the fucker bleed.
I dug the knife in a little deeper. “Tell me!”
He gave a wheezing laugh and turned his head, looking at me over his shoulder. I’d seen men with eyes like his. Dead. Soulless. Whoever this bastard was, he hadn’t had good intentions for my woman.
“Pretty thing,” he said then licked his lips. “She’d have been my good girl, until she spread her legs for the likes of you.”
My stomach twisted. Fuck. He’d seen us? How the hell had he watched me and Hayley? We’d been too far from the property line at the compound. Had he gotten inside somehow? I glanced at Grimm and knew he was wondering the same thing with the way his eyes had narrowed and his lips had thinned.
“You were inside the gates?” Grimm asked. “Because you couldn’t have seen them otherwise.”
“Easy enough,” the man said.
“Who are you?” Warden asked.
“Don’t matter. Do what you have to,” he said.
I glanced at Snake and gave a nod. He backed off and turned for the house. I knew he’d bring the chief,
