Harboring Harlow - K.A Knight Page 0,147
have clothes and gadgets from the city, and yet we still get to hunt for our food and have our privacy. I love it here. It’s been a few days since we first moved in, and we have easily fallen back into our way of living.
My options for a future on Earth were taken away before I even knew them, but here I am with a fresh start. I can do whatever I want, and I’m finding some hobbies I enjoy. Takkar found some hide for me and cleaned it and dried it stiff, then Sev and Dev located some flowers, and when I accidentally got the plants wet, they made a paste.
Like paint.
So now my very first painting made from the petals of alien flowers hangs on our wall. It’s of how I imagine Bakkar would look based off the images I get from my mates. He’s always in our hearts, and now Takkar gets to see him again while I get to see the Totiv who was destined to be mine but taken too soon.
Takkar sits in front of it for hours, and when I first showed him, my big warrior cried. I painted it from his and the twins’ memories. Bakkar is smiling wide like they said he always did, and he looks similar to Takkar.
It makes this feel like a home.
We have all suffered for so long, and now we are settling down and starting to enjoy life as a family. The twins have discovered they love pranks. It started that day in the pool and has only escalated since. Takkar likes to play fight and explore. And me, I like to watch them, finding their happiness contagious and laughing at their antics. Okay…so I join in on a few pranks, but what’s a girl to do when her mate fills her bed with alien ants? She obviously gets even.
Like now.
Dev throws me a mock glare as he tugs self-consciously at his dyed pink hair. It seems my paints are good for pranks too, though I must admit he looks cute.
Not cute, mate, fierce, he rumbles into my mind, making me smile wider.
Yes, my love, fierce, so fierce, I correct, and he grins. Now, my fierce warrior, shoo, I have a surprise for you all.
With a reluctant kiss goodbye, he heads out to find Sev and Takkar as I get started on my latest plan. It takes a few hours, and when I’m done, I step back and mentally call for them.
I nervously look at the meal I’ve made as my mates rush into the room, weapons drawn. “What’s wrong?” they all snarl, making me giggle.
“Nothing, it’s time to eat,” I tell them, as they peer from me to the table in confusion.
“Mate, did you cook?” Sev asks, and I nod, wringing my hands nervously before I just blurt out my intention.
“Back on Earth, my sisters and I used to have a family meal every week. I miss it, I thought—I thought we could have one now. All of us eating and talking, just being together.”
Dev smiles as he sheathes his knife. “Little mate, that’s a lovely idea.” He steps forward and kisses me before taking a seat.
Sev kisses me as well and sits next to Dev. Takkar simply grabs me and drags me onto his lap as he perches on his chair. Sev cuts some meat and adds the veggies I found, giving me a plate of food before he makes himself one.
We have a family meal.
We laugh, we joke, we talk about Kitty falling from a tree and scaring the animal he and Takkar were hunting. But then through the ruckus, comes a bleep. Turning my body, I slip from Takkar’s arms to grab the comm unit my mates taught me how to use before sliding back onto his lap. I press the button, and Dr. Mytari comes onto the screen.
“Harlow, how are you? How’s Takkar?”
“Good, thank you, and yourself?” I ask. He’s been helping us via video with Takkar’s mental state, and it’s actually been very helpful.
“Good, good…I, erm, have something to tell you,” he stutters out nervously.
The guys quiet down as I swallow and lick my lips. “Okay?”
“Harlow…we know she’s your friend, and I thought you should know. Tatiana is awake, but vacant and unresponsive. She’s traumatised by what happened to her.” He pauses, meeting my gaze. I’m scared for my sister and the internal war she clearly has to overcome.
“What are you saying?” I prompt, my voice breaking from fear.
He sighs and straightens his white doctor’s jacket. “We are going to have to train her.”
