mate, you’ll make an enemy out of me.”
The heavenly light receded, and air returned to the room.
A few students collapsed, but they would live.
My gaze found Nat, Yelena, and Marie, and a ragged, relieved breath left my lips. They nodded at me in gratitude, awe, and fear, knowing that I’d shielded them from the war god’s slaughter, but their tense body language showed that they feared the merciless god would pull another stunt.
My heart clenched in anger and guilt. If it weren’t for me, they wouldn’t have been in this situation in the first place.
Marie pulled out her walkie talkie radio from her belt and called for healers for the students.
Ares smirked at the fuming demigods and me as if nothing had happened and he’d just returned from strolling through the park.
“Marigold isn’t your mate since I don’t approve,” the god said, maddened obsession burning through his eyes. “She isn’t mated to any of you. And I’ve just found a worthy partner. This boring century has finally shown some sparks.” He winked at me. “See you around, my fierce lioness.”
He vanished before the demigods had a chance to rush and attack him. In his wake, a battle song vibrating in the air.
I buried my face into Héctor’s chest as chill sank into my bone marrows.
The God of War had marked me as his object of desire. He’d remove any obstacle to get me, and my demigods stood in his warpath.
CHAPTER 10

We’d been lucky that the God of War hadn’t known my strength when my shield resisted his Glory. It would have shattered within seconds if he hadn’t pulled back his power.
The demigods had been strained to the extreme to shield me. I could feel their exhaustion. The tension hadn’t left them, even though the god was gone.
We couldn’t always count on luck.
Ares would come to me soon.
I brushed aside that dark thought and hurried toward my friends.
The healers had arrived. They were checking on the students, but I needed to make sure my friends were okay in person.
Héctor pulled me back.
“I must see to my friends,” I growled.
“You first,” the death demigod said. “We need to check you first.”
“I appreciate it,” I said, “but you can’t always treat me like fragile glass.”
Héctor produced a handkerchief and wiped the blood from my nose.
“It was just nosebleed,” I grunted.
The demigods ignored my protests and started to inspect me, hands groping my person. It was an inappropriate place to feel pleasure when they touched me, but my body seemed to be their instrument in any setting. Their touch was like the fire song in my veins, igniting me.
I arched my back and suppressed moans.
“You’ll need to feed soon, Buttercup,” Paxton said as if he was the wise one.
“I won’t feed on any of you today,” I murmured. “You’re all spent, and I’m not a fucking vampire.”
“We’ll be fine, Cookie,” Axel said, trying to conceal the fatigue and lingering anger in his voice.
“Class is adjourned,” Zak announced to the students before fixing his concerned gaze on me, lightning wheeling in his silver eyes.
The aloof Demigod of Sky had disappeared since he’d met me, replaced by this warm, considerate, and levelheaded demigod.
“Let’s get Rosebud out of here,” he ordered.
“Wait!” I cried.
I shoved them before they grabbed me and teleported me. “I said I need to see my friends. It won’t take long.”
“Let her,” Paxton said. “We need to stop imposing our wills on her, thinking we know better. Let her do her things and treat her as our equal. It takes some getting used to, but if we don’t adapt quickly, we’ll just turn her off and drive her away.”
“You’re the last man on Earth who should give advice on relationships,” Axel snorted, but he let go of me.
All the demigods stepped back to give me space and let me do my shit, as suggested by Paxton.
“Make it quick, lamb,” Héctor called after me. “We need to take you to the safe house.”
I sighed. It would take a long time for them to lose some of their overprotective and possessive traits and habits.
I sprang to Nat’s and Yelena’s side. They were shuddering, like the other students. Two healers used magic to heal the students who’d been hurt the most. A first-year who shared the dorm with Yelena and me wasn’t moving, and one of Demetra’s clique members was weeping.
Crying was considered a fatal weakness within the ranks of the Dominions. They might kick the girl out of the Academy after this episode, despite that it
