isn’t like you.”
“I had a meeting. Two meetings in fact. Casey believed she had found the peacemakers, or one of them and an ally called me for aid.”
“And did she find this third line? What kind of aid does our kind give here and what kind of allies do you have?”
“I think she has found one of them. How well it will work is a question for another day. Our allies here? Another race, the ones who shift into something other than what they are. The aid? Finding out if one of theirs held the blood of a thrice damned Calian.”
“And did she?”
“It was a he and yes. I thought the line only could go through the females.A female Calian would, when bred to a male shifter, produce a female with the powers of both. But he proves the males can take a Calian mate and produce a male child with no powers. The blood, when they mate with the shifters, the Calian blood doesn’t rise in the next generation if he is any indication. Unless they marry into the warrior line, then it takes yet another generation to fail them. They have the Golden Book our people searched for so many years.”
Dominick hissed before he got himself under control. “Do they know what they have? They can’t know or have they changed so much.”
“Both. They don’t know what they hold and they have changed so much they don’t know what they came from or who they could be. I intend to continue that until what they were can never rise again.”
“Do you think you can? What if they revolt? They could rise against you.”
“I married their princess and made her their queen. Do you think my heart mate could turn against me?”
“No, you are right. Unless they figure out the book. It is possible, if the two lines you don’t hold figure out the book, it is possible if history is correct.”
“I have seen the book. Some things we believed are wrong, and somethings we didn’t believe are true. But, they can’t use the book, not as they are, not without Casey. And she has seen the damage they have done to this planet by accident, she supports me fully. I think it fills them with horror to find out they have the power to destroy. Some few would enjoy that power, but the ones who will lead are not the ones who would crave power.”
“We need more information if we are to give you an answer. We need to meet these ones you believe will change the race until it is diminished and falls.”
“I expect nothing less. Now, I have been doing some research, or rather the others have been doing some research on their primitive equipment and we think we can figure out how to find Drac’s former mate.” Dacron pulled up his data reader and began to outline the ideas for trapping Catherine. By the time the others came back in the room after giving the two time together they were deep in plans. It didn’t take long to get all the men on board so that by the time they retired for the night they had a workable plan.
Chapter Nineteen
Gracie tried talking to Keith but he didn’t answer. She finally gave up and turned worried eyes toward Halo. Leaning over she whispered. “Do you think they are going to kill us?”
Despite ignoring all her questions this was the one question, not even directed at him, that their driver, escort, jailer chose to answer. “Don’t try that around Gammon. He won’t like it and you may die. That is for Gammon to decide. You aren’t Hendrix’s true mate so your death won’t kill him. That child you carry, if it is his, will be the only thing that may save you.”
“Don’t try what around Gammon?” Gracie hadn’t noticed that Keith had answered a question he shouldn’t have been able to hear but from the way Halo’s eyes had widened he had realized.
“Whispering. We can hear, well.”
“Oh, that explains it. I always told Hendrix he could hear a grasshopper fart from a mile away.”
Halo swung his head around and glared at her. “Does that have anything to do with why he called me grasshopper earlier?”
“I didn’t hear him call you that. When?” she demanded.
“Right after he closed the door. He told me I should have taken better care of you and called me a grasshopper.”
“I didn’t call you a grasshopper fart, he called you that.”
“Why in the
