The Ghost In My Bedroom - By Heather Jones Page 0,49
"Okay you're hired."
"Piss off Dan," Spencer appeared from out of nowhere.
"Whatever, okay you do sound good with Kate."
"I told you she was fantastic," Spencer said giving me a wink.
"Listen," Jon said pulling me aside. "I have to go to work, are you okay here without me?"
I glanced at the others and said, "Yeah, if I'm going to do this I might as well find my way with all of them."
"That's the spirit. Good luck." He gave me a kiss good bye and headed out.
I turned back to the others. "So now what?"
"We've been looking online for lyrics, so now we just have to learn the words and work it out with Dan. The lyrics aren't very hard for backup vocals usually, so it shouldn't be too hard for us." Kate gave me a reassuring smile.
Dan continued being semi-rude and said, "Yeah, just follow Kate's lead and you'll be fine."
"Sure."
We ran through a few songs with Dan, who was giving the full on front man I'm-too-good-to-be-stuck-here-practicing-with-you attitude. It was pretty amusing to watch him be so full of himself. Kate was enjoying herself, and was even throwing in some dance moves as she sang. She nudged me to follow along as she motioned with her hands and swayed to the music. I felt silly but followed along and soon we were semi-coordinated as we sung along to various oldies. Dan decided to call it quits after a couple of hours and Kate and I started discussing what we would wear.
"The guys agreed to wear button up shirts and ties, so I figure we should be kind of fancy too. I was thinking maybe we could wear our prom dresses."
"I didn't go to my prom."
"You didn't?"
"No, my boyfriend and I broke up a few weeks before it so I never finished my dress."
"Oh, sorry that really sucks. You were making your prom dress?"
"Yeah, well, I bought fabric but I never started sewing it."
"What is it supposed to look like?"
"It's midnight blue satin with black organza around the shoulders and inside the skirt to make it all poofy. Kind of pin-up girl styling." I ran my hands around myself as I described it to her.
"That sounds nice."
"Yeah well, I didn't get very far."
"Do you think you could make it before the wedding?"
"I guess so."
"Do you think you could make two dresses before the wedding?"
"You want me to make you a dress?"
"Could you? I think it sounds really pretty, and we would be so coordinated, like a real band."
"I guess I could make one for you too. I would need more fabric though."
"I can get fabric. How much would you need?"
"A few yards."
"Where can I get it?"
"Oh, I work at a fabric store, I can get it there."
"Really?"
"Sure. But I should probably get started on it right away."
"Spencer, can you drive us to Lucy's fabric store?"
"I sure can."
"Okay, let's go get some fabric then."
"All right."
We piled into Spencer's van and I sat up front again so I could tell him how to get there. He seemed to prefer my presence up there anyway instead of his sister's. We got to the store and my manager was at the registers, "Hey Lucy, long time no see."
"Hey Jane. Not very busy huh?"
"Nope, pretty dead. What did you come back for?"
"I need to get some fabric."
"Go figure. Tina is around somewhere, she can cut for you."
"Cool. I'll see you in a bit then."
I had already lost Kate and Spencer in the store. I knew where the fabric was so I pulled the bolts of satin and organza and hunted down Kate so I could show her. She and Spencer had found some cool plaid flannel. Spencer inappropriately asked if I could make him some boxers.
"I don't think so."
"This is gorgeous!" Kate said ignoring Spencer and fingering the satin.
"Yeah, this is what I have at home."
"Lucy, it makes me so sad to think you didn't go to your prom. I would have been more than happy to be your date," Spencer said.
"Spencer, can you just shut up for once?"
"No problem."
"So I have to go find the pattern for this, what size do you wear?"
"Usually a 10."
"Okay, can you hold this?" I gave her the bolts and she seemed fascinated by the fabric, she kept running her hands over it and feeling it between her fingers. She followed me to the pattern table and I flipped through the books until I found the pattern.
"How does this work?"
"Well, these books all have a pattern number by the pictures, so you
