The Ghost In My Bedroom - By Heather Jones Page 0,40
while the boardwalk stopped and the buildings on the land grew more and more residential and private.
"It must be so fabulous to have a house on the seaside," I thought aloud.
"Yeah until you have a hurricane or a flood or a bad storm and loose everything."
"You're a little bit of a downer."
"I'd be a perfect insurance salesman."
We eventually ran out of beach and figured it was about time to turn around and go the other way. We stopped plenty of times when there weren't a lot of people around to make out in the water. At one point Jon pulled me down into the water to kiss me as the waves washed over us like you see in the movies. It wasn't quite as glamorous they make it out to be as our mouths filled with salt water and sand got up into my bathing suit. Still, it was thoroughly enjoyable to be rolling around with Jon in the water. I gave up on my dress after that and pulled it up over my head. I resituated my suit, wrung out my dress and we continued on our way back to the blanket. I draped my dress over the back of a chair to dry off and we dragged Kate to come out in the water with us away from the surfers.
The waves were still not very large as we dove into them, and I felt bad for Spencer for not having a good surfing day, until he showed up behind me in the water, lifted me up and threw me into a breaking wave. Then he proceeded to do the same to Kate. I think he was about to try it on Jon, but he was too quick and managed to pull Spencer under by diving for his knees. We all waged war on each other in the water for a long time until we decided we were hungry for lunch. Spencer and Kate went off in search of food to bring back to the blanket. Jon and I stretched out on the blanket to dry off a little in the sun.
"Are you having fun so far?"
"Yes I am, I'm so glad you suggested coming here. I'm even getting used to Spencer a little. Do you think he'd let me try his surf board later?"
"Maybe, doesn't seem like it's going to do him any good today anyway."
"What's not going to do me any good?" he asked carrying a 2-foot hoagie.
"Jealous much?" I laughed at him.
"Huh? Oh haha, you're so funny," he sulked. "Hope you guys like Italian." He unwrapped the hoagie and handed us each a section cautioning us to guard it against the seagulls. Kate handed out bottles of soda and napkins and settled herself next to me.
"Hey Spencer, can I try your surfboard after lunch?"
He looked at me like I was crazy. "You want to go out in the waves?"
"No, I just want to see if I can stand up on it really, I don't want a real surf lesson or anything."
"Yeah, sure I guess." He contemplated me with interest as he finished his sandwich and then watched me eat mine. I was a very slow eater so I asked how band practice was going to draw some attention away from me.
"It's going okay, we're working out a playlist and learning some new songs the bride requested. We played some Beatles yesterday, The Mama's and the Papa's, Buddy Holly," Jon said.
"Yeah, we tried the Beach Boys too, much against Danny's desire."
"That's cool. What are you guys going to wear?"
Jon shrugged and Spencer gave me a quizzical look. "What do you mean what are we going to wear?"
"Well, it's a wedding, you can't show up in jeans and t-shirts. You might as well class it up a little and wear suits or something."
"Are you serious?" Spencer looked at me with a worried look on his face. "A suit?"
"Actually Spencer, she has a point," Kate chimed in. "You really should dress up a little for this wedding. It would be too inappropriate to wear your everyday stuff."
"I think it would be cool if we all wore suits," added Jon. "Think about it, the Beatles always wore suits. Even in their movies they were always wearing suits. Come to think of it I think everyone back then did."
"Oh come on. How the hell am I going to drum in a suit?"
"We're not exactly playing heavy metal, I don't think it would be too hard."
