Getting the Axe - Nikki Mays Page 0,66
marvel at how a stone so smooth and shiny can still feel coarse. But I suppose life itself is that way most days. Even on the most perfect days, there’s always a little imperfection.
“You should have seen how pretty all three girls looked in their wedding gowns. Well, they’re not girls, but you get it.” I chuckle to myself as I continue my one-sided conversation. “And our boys looked so handsome, JR. They turned out to be so wonderful. You would be so proud of the three of them.” I gush. “They definitely got your handsome looks.”
I go about fussing over the arrangement of the flowers. I swear, nothing ever looks quite right. No matter what, nothing is ever good enough for this special man. He deserves the best, even in death, damn it.
“But as anything Ross related, there were definitely a few incidents, shall we say?” I giggled at the look on Noah’s and Elle’s faces when I opened up that door. “I guess I probably should’ve knocked on the door before just walking in. But how in the hell was I supposed to know that Noah would be in there practically mauling his future wife? I swear, that boy just really has absolutely no patience where Elle is concerned.” I snort loudly. “And that poor girl turned so red, I thought that I would start seeing steam rising up from her head. I don’t think that I’ve ever seen anyone look so embarrassed. And considering that I was in the room when she gave birth to the handsome little man, that’s saying something. But boy did she shove our Noah away from her like he had the damn plague.”
I shake my head ruefully as I dust off some of the debris that has collected on top of the stone. “It’s not, I think that they aren’t going at it like rabbits. They already gave me a new grandson and I have a sneaking suspicion that I’ll be getting to hold another cute little Ross in the near future.” I tap my lips. “Although, I think that’s true for all of them. Ben and Mason weren’t much better. Kellie and Mason were suspiciously late for the reception, both looking curiously rumpled. Jessie and Ben also walked in looking a little too pleased with themselves last night as well. I swear, those kids are worse than rabbits.”
I shrug. “But if it gets me more grandbabies to spoil and love on, so be it.” My face lights up at another thought. “And speaking of our grandbabies, little miss Lexi just stole the show as the cutest flower girl in the world. She and Logan made quite the adorable pair walking down the aisle slower than molasses, making sure to place down one rose petal at a time. Mac finally took pity on everyone in attendance and picked them up and walked them the rest of the way.”
I narrow my eyes at the stone, imagining that it’s actually my husband's face. “And don’t be giving me a sour look at the mention of Mac. I know that you too had your differences, or should I say and undying hatred for one another, but he’s important to me and you need to accept that he’s going to be in my life for the rest of it.”
I sigh longingly as I rub the stone as I used to his cheek. “He’s such a good man now JR. Nothing like the hard headed schmuck he was when we were teenagers. Although, I suppose we all had a lot of growing up to do in those days. And I can’t be sad about how everything turned out. I spent an amazing forty years with you. And now I’ll spend the rest with him. I guess life really does come full circle at the end. Life’s funny that way.”
“I thought that I might find you here.” Speak of the devil and he shall appear. Mac walks up to me and places a chaste kiss on my forehead. “Telling him about all of the festivities from yesterday?” His eyes are dancing with mirth.
If I didn’t already treasure him, I would just for the way that he accepted that I come and talk to JR. He’s even come and sat quietly on a bench for over an hour a few times while I have. I appreciate that he never shows any annoyance or agitation about it. If anything, he’s always supportive, even telling me to come and “bounce ideas
