Getting the Axe - Nikki Mays Page 0,26

have my mother to thank for that, I’m sure.” I’m not a hundred percent sure, but I have my suspicions.

His next words confirm what I’ve thought. “That you do, my man. Shit, she even paid me a visit to make sure that I didn’t help you plan a jailbreak.” He laughs.

“It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside, knowing how loyal you are to me,” I mutter petulantly.

His snort is amused. “You’re like a brother to me. There’s a lot of shit that I would do in this world to help you out, but going up against your momma ain’t one of them.” He lets out a bark of a laugh. “Fuck man, even your actual blood brothers won’t help you out. You’re shit out of luck, bro. You just need to get yourself good and comfortable over there.”

“I need to get new friends and family. All of you assholes suck. Not one of you tried to get me out of this.” I growl.

“Don’t act like you aren’t enjoying being near the object of your obsession,” cough. “I mean affection.” He fucking giggles to himself like a five-year-old little girl.

“This is pure torture. I’m in hell, man. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to survive this.” I whine like a little bitch.

He chuckles darkly. “Don’t act like you aren’t enjoying being near her at all times. Knowing that there isn’t anyone, specifically any man, in her house besides you.” Okay, fine, he has a point there, not that I’ll be telling him that though. “And your stubborn ass doesn’t have to agree with me.” Asshole. “I’ve known you long enough to know that this isn’t even half as bad as you’re making it out to be.”

“You don’t know that” I grumble as I get up and walk out onto the balcony. I make sure to shut the door for some added privacy.

“I sure as shit know that. And I also know that if you would get your head outta your ass that you could be enjoying your time there even more. A whole lot more.” It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what he’s hinting too.

“We’ve talked about this.” I sigh as I watch the sun go down. The days are finally getting a little longer. “It just wouldn’t work.”

“Here you go again with this bullshit.” My best friend mutters.

Choosing to ignore him, I continue on. “Trust me, after being here for days, I can tell you that she is way too good for me.”

“At least we agree on something.” Jackass.

“Can I finish without you interrupting me every fucking two seconds with something stupid coming out of your mouth?” I growl.

“Someone’s touchy.” He laughs. “Or is it because someone isn’t getting touched?”

I tilt my head back and wonder why I’m being punished like this. How did I end up with this asshole as my best friend?

“Are you done?” I drawl.

“Please, continue, I’m all ears.” I probably should look into getting some new friends, the old ones suck these days.

“She’s,” I start and just look up into the sky. “Just good, man. I don’t know how to describe it. Just that she can do a hell of a lot better than a grumpy old bastard like me.” I say meaning every word.

“You’re a good man, Noah. You’re loyal, hardworking, and not always a miserable bastard. Trust me, man, she would be lucky to have someone like you. You should stop selling yourself short. Why don’t you man up and actually go after the only woman that you’ve actually wanted in years?”

“She tried to kill me with an axe. I’m pretty sure that’s a good indicator of how she feels about me.” I mumble.

“Every couple has their hurdles.” I can hear the smile on his face. “Plus, do you really think that anyone would actually let her near you if we thought that she was seriously trying to harm you?”

“Still doesn’t mean that she wants me around.” I sound pathetic even to my own ears.

“Answer me something, man?”

I nod my head like an idiot. “Shoot.”

“Do you really think that you would be at her place if she didn’t want you there?”

I frown. “She feels guilty,” I say pitifully.

“Anytime I’ve felt guilty, I’ve never once thought about opening up my home. You should think about that. You being there says a lot more than you think it does, brother.”

It’s a few hours later and I’m tossing and turning, replaying Edge’s words from earlier. We ended our call after
