Getting the Axe - Nikki Mays Page 0,12
lessen anyone’s enjoyment.”
Ben looks between Noah and me, smirks, and shakes his head. “I’m going to go get some food. You two have fun throwing this round.” He turns on his heel and walks towards Mason, who oddly enough is staring right at us. Such weird guys…or maybe that’s just all men. I muse to myself.
Noah walks upright to the line and stands there with his hands on his hips. “You wouldn’t want to be the cause of low morale, now would you?” This sarcastic mother fu…
I walk up and stand toe to toe with him. Fine, he wants to do this, we can totally end this weird little truce that we’ve seemed to enter into. I swear, no one else can piss me off in under a second flat. This man gets under my skin like no one else and it is truly infuriating.
I can feel my face flame and anger begins to course through my veins.
“Of course I don’t want that.” I really don’t know how to stop myself when he pisses me off. “You’ve been accomplishing that all on your own for months now. I would never want to upstage you, oh Lord of the Grumps.” I even do a little bow and a weird curtsey. Judging from some of the chuckles I hear, I’m guessing that we have an audience, but I couldn’t care less.
Noah’s eyes look like tiny squints and I’m pretty sure that I would be dust from the fire shooting out of them if that were possible.
He gets even closer to me, a feat that I didn’t think was possible. “Little girl, it’s never good to piss off the wolf, especially when you’re the lamb.” His voice is so low, and it sends a shiver down my spine. I just really wish that it was out of fear.
I smirk and roll my eyes just to irk him. I’ve figured out that’s one of his pet peeves and I make sure to use it to my advantage. “What are you going to do? Eat me?”
I see his lips twitch faintly. “You have no idea.”
I’m so done with him and his attitude. “Will you just leave me alone to take my pointless turn in peace, please?” I give him a smile that’s a thousand percent forced and fake.
He crosses his arms over his chest and I absolutely do not pay attention to how his red and black checkered flannel bunches up. Nope, not this girl. “It wouldn’t be so pointless if you tried your best instead of just giving it some half-assed attempt.”
“I’m not giving it a half-assed attempt, Noah,” I growl and can feel myself getting angrier by the second. “Some of us just aren’t good at certain things. Sorry that not all of us can be perfect with stellar personalities.”
His eye and cheek do this weird twitching thing. “I didn’t say that you had to do it perfectly.” I’ll admit that his growl is a lot more impressive than mine. He even bends down so that we’re face to face. “All I said was for you to actually try instead of just saying that you can’t do it and quitting before you even start.”
It's at this moment that everything seems to slow down.
I go to tap him on the chest while yelling at him that I am trying. The only problem…I’m right-handed.
“I am trying you gigantic ass…OH MY GOD!” I scream as I see an axe, the axe that I was holding just a second ago now sitting in Noah’s chest.
“Fuuuuuuck!” Is what he yells before stumbling backward. He looks down at his chest and then looks at me with wide eyes.
Before I know it, Mason and Ben are at his side and all three go from looking at the axe to looking at me and back again. I just stand in there with my hands covering my mouth and tears streaming down my face.
“I’m so sorry.” I hiccup. “I forgot that I was holding it. I was just going to punch you in the shoulder.” My words are kind of intelligible, but they seem to understand me.
“You forgot that you were holding an axe?” All three ask incredulously, not that I can blame them.
“Yes.” I wail. “You’re so annoying that I just forgot that I was holding it.”
Mase purses his lips. “Damn Elle, way to kick a man when he’s down.”
Ben looks at him and then Noah. “Actually, he’s still standing.”
Mason tilts his head and gives Ben an annoyed look. “Really? You
