that was all about? But of course he didn’t reply, only licked his muzzle, and then dodged into the yard.
Chapter 4
Sarah pulled the iron gate closed and leaned the corner of it against the brick pillar. Glancing around the yard, she wondered if there was anything she could use to tie it shut, but then realized most people probably don’t leave rope lying around the back yard. Well… one more thing to add to the list. She may not be able to afford a landscaper, but a fence and a gate to keep Shakespeare in was a must.
As she and Shakespeare made it to the house, she opened the door and shrieked at someone poking their head out. It was Kendra and they had been nose to nose until Sarah had jumped back and screamed. What are you doing? Are you trying to give me a heart attack?
Well I would ask you the same question. I’ve been searching the house for you and just came to the conclusion that there must be some serial killer type creeper living in the basement and he must have abducted you from your bed last night. But then I check the back yard one more time before I call the police and see you riding up on a horse, accompanied by the hunkiest man I’ve ever seen.
Sarah laughed sarcastically and shook her head as she pushed past Kendra. Honestly, with that imagination, you should be the writer.
Well? Kendra asked excitedly. Where did hunky cowboy come from? And is there another one?
Shakespeare got out of the yard and disappeared. Luke found him, then he found me after I hit my head and helped me back to the house. She grabbed a paper towel from the counter and blotted at her head. At least it appeared the bleeding had stopped.
Tell me about the cowboy. Luke is it?
Sarah walked to the couch and plopped down. That was a strange encounter. He was friendly, quite a talker, until he found out who I am. Then he clammed up and couldn’t get away from me fast enough.
Kendra wrinkled her nose at Sarah’s words. What do you mean ‘found out who you are’?
When I told him this was my grandmother’s house.
What’s he got against the house? Kendra asked defensively.
Sarah shook her head and shrugged. Nothing. He said he assumed I was staying here and didn’t realize the house had already been sold. It was after I told him I had inherited the house that he started acting strange.
Maybe he was interested in the house and was upset to learn a city slicker ended up with it and didn’t pay anything for it.
Sarah gave an unlady-like snort. How would he know I’m from the city?
Come on. I can just imagine you traipsing through the woods. I’m sure he could tell you aren’t familiar with the outdoors.
Sarah folded her arms over her chest and realized Kendra was probably right. She didn’t fit in in the country, but she wasn’t going to admit that to Kendra. She thought back to her conversation with Luke and came to the same conclusion as before. The house wasn’t the problem, no, Luke was upset over her for some reason. There was no other explanation.
A chiming sound filled the house and Sarah stared at Kendra. Simultaneously, they each asked, What is that?
Sarah laughed and shrugged, Maybe it’s an odd sounding doorbell. But who would be at the door?
They began toward the front of the house and Kendra giggled, I bet it’s your hunky cowboy.
Sarah narrowed her eyes at her, Hes not MY cowboy. And I doubt it. At that moment, Sarah reached the door and pulled it open to find Luke standing on the other side, his horse standing at the edge of the yard, tied to a tree. Luke, what can I do for you?
He smiled and held out his hand, in it, her phone. You forgot this in the saddle bag. I forgot it was in there too. Until it started ringing, that is.
Thank you. Im sorry you had to come back here to give it to me. Sarah tried to fight away the happy feeling welling inside her that he had come back.
Luke leaned against the door frame and said, I also wanted to tell you that Im sorry for the way I acted earlier
Sarah cut him off, Think nothing of it. Thank you again for helping me.
No let me explain. Relations between our families havent exactly been friendly, theres been a bit of
