on the spot.
This is a small hospital so the halls arent busy. The nurses up at the nursing station are going to notice anyone coming or going.
So how did you get in here? she asked.
I waited until the desk was empty, but the odds of that happening again soon are slim. Both nurses have already had their breaks.
So what do you want me to do? she asked.
Just follow me up the hall. Stay a bit behind me and once I engage the nurses in conversation, walk by quickly like youre in a hurry.
She nodded and followed him out of the room. She walked slowly, letting him put some distance between them. He stopped at the end of the hallway and leaned down over the desk, asking the nurses where cardiology was. She noticed how he smiled down at the nurses and how they smiled back flirtatiously. She was positive that the one womans lip was even quivering. She hadnt given it any thought until now, but Dirk was good-looking, gorgeous even, now that she was going to acknowledge it and apparently he knew how to use his good looks to his advantage.
She hurriedly walked by, knowing that she should keep her face as hidden as possible, but not being able to refrain from glancing over at the nurses who were fawning over Dirk. One of them was standing now, and Jane saw her reach over the desk and place her hand on Dirks arm. She heard a noise that sounded very similar to a growl. It startled her momentarily until she heard it a second time and realized that the sound was coming from her. Had she just been growling at Dirk? Or maybe the nurses? She moved to hide her face and hurried on down the hall, hoping that none of them had heard her.
Luckily no one came after her and once she was through the doors leading out into the main hall, she ducked around the corner and exhaled loudly. She overheard Dirk inside, telling the nurse that he had to make a phone call but would be back in a moment so she could show him how to get to cardiology.
He soon emerged from the double doors and she could see his nostrils flaring, undoubtedly sniffing for her scent. In a second, his head snapped around to where she stood and he said, Are you insane? You cant go around growling at humans!
She wrinkled her nose at him and mumbled, You heard that?
Yes I heard it and youre damn lucky that those nurses didnt.
She shrugged and then scowled at him, You seemed to be keeping them pretty distracted.
A smile formed on his lips and she rolled her eyes at his arrogance.
Next thing she knew, his grin was gone and his face was serious as he studied her. An odd silence stretched between them and Jane cleared her throat to break through it. So where are you taking me? she asked.
For now were heading back to my hotel room, he explained.
Shed started to walk with him, but came to a halt at his words. Surely he wasnt meaning that the way it sounded. What if I dont want to go with you? she questioned.
I dont think you have a choice, he replied with a raised brow.
And how do you get that? she growled at him, angry that he was planning to force her to go with him.
Im only saying that you really dont have anywhere else to go.
Her lips clamped tightly together and she lowered her brows at him, realizing that he was right. She didnt even know her own name, where else could she go?
He took her by the arm and led her into the elevator. Well talk about it in the car. Right now we have to get out of here before the staff realize youre missing.
The elevator door opened when they reached the ground floor and Jane cautiously glanced around as she and Dirk stepped out of it. No one seemed to be paying any special attention to them and she didnt see anyone acting as if they were looking for someone. Jane fell back a step from Dirk, letting him lead her out of the hospital since she didnt know where the exit was.
Once they were outside, Jane was grateful to be out of the bright lights of the hospital. The sun had set and the moon was bright, allowing just enough illumination that she could see everything plainly. It was a relief for
