snake that was tattooed on the inside of his bicep.

“That must have hurt,” she said as the door buzzed for a third time.

He shrugged and ran his fingers over her flower tattoo. “The ones on my ribs hurt worse.”

“Is it the most painful spot?”

“Skull is probably more painful,” he said, “but the ribs are pretty bad. You thinking of getting more ink?”

“I don’t know,” she said. “I’m not sure what to get and I have to have it somewhere hidden from my students. Maybe I could get a favourite quote or something on my upper thigh?”

His hand squeezed her ass. “I could create a script for you.”

“Really? That would be cool to have an original script. Now I just need to figure out what quote I’ll use.”

He stroked her satin skin above the small patch of her pubic hair.

“You could put something right here,” he said. “I’ve got the perfect quote.”

“Oh yeah?” Her voice was a bit breathless. “What would it say?”

He stroked her skin again. “Preacher’s pussy.”

She gaped at him before bursting into giggles. “That is so cheesy.”

He laughed and she sat up and leaned over him. He touched her silky hair, rubbing it between his fingers as she arched her eyebrows at him. “Do you try and brand every woman you have sex with, Mr. Preacher?”

His gaze dropped to the barbell in her right nipple and she followed his gaze. “What?”

“Nothing,” he said. If she knew what the SW engraved in the barbell really meant, she’d freak out. Still, it wouldn’t stop him from doing the same thing when he pierced her other nipple.

She touched his forehead. “How often do you get migraines?”

He shrugged. “Once a month, sometimes more.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I’m sorry I showed up on your doorstep like that,” he said. “Thanks for not telling me to fuck off and die, like I deserved.”

She stroked his forehead again. “I wouldn’t have done that. Migraines are horrible and I’m glad I could help you.”

“Do you get migraines? Is that why you knew what to do?” he said.

“No, my mom suffers from them. I’ve done a lot of research on migraines.”

He studied her for a few seconds before saying, “I’m sorry about Tuesday, I shouldn’t have -”

“Addison? You home, babe?”

She froze in the bed as Harrison’s voice echoed down the hallway. Anger shot through him. “What the fuck is that prick doing here?”

“I don’t know,” she said.

“How the hell did he even get in here?”

“I forgot to get his keys back from him,” she said as she threw back the covers. “Stay here. I’ll get rid of him.”

“Don’t let him touch you.”

“What?”

He sat up and put his arm around her waist, pulling her closer until their faces were only inches apart. “Don’t let him touch you, Addison.”

“I won’t,” she said.

“Good.” He kissed her hard on the mouth before letting her go and relaxing on the bed. She touched her mouth as Harrison’s voice drifted down the hallway.

“Babe? Are you up?”

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Addison snatched her robe out of the closet and belted it securely before opening the door. Harrison was almost to her bedroom and she slipped into the hallway and shut the door.

“Hey,” Harrison said. “You’re here. Are you still sleeping? You never sleep in.”

“What are you doing here?” she said.

“I came to talk.”

“And you just let yourself in?” She glanced at the bedroom before pushing past Harrison toward the kitchen. Thankfully, he followed her, and she glared at him as she grabbed a pod of coffee and stuck it into the machine.

“It’s almost ten. Why are you still in bed?” Harrison said. “And what’s going on with your hair?”

“I just woke up,” she said as the smell of coffee filled the kitchen. “Why are you here?”

“I told you – I wanted to talk.”

“You can’t just come into my apartment, Harrison.” She grabbed the milk from the fridge and added some to her coffee.

“Babe, we’ve been together since high school. You don’t care if I let myself into your apartment.”

“Actually, I do,” she said. “We’re not together anymore, remember?”

“That’s what I’m here to talk about,” he said as he reached for the coffee. “Thanks, babe.”

“This isn’t for you.” She backed away. “Jesus, Harrison.”

He stared at her in surprise as she sipped at the coffee. “Addie? You’re acting really differently.”

“What do you want?”

“I miss you, babe. I’m ready to end this break we’re on.”

Her mouth dropped open and she stared silently at him.

He cleared his throat. “I told you I needed a bit of time to get some stuff out of my
