on the spot to place his bite. It was right there, on the hollow on one side of her throat, where her pulse beat.

Much as he wanted that, it would have to wait. He still had plenty of proving to do. So he snapped his eyes shut and went back to feeling. And Lord, was there plenty of that to enjoy. He tightened his grip on her hips, pulling her body firmly against his. Then he thrust upward, timing the move with Holly’s next slide.

She gasped. “So good…”

He sucked in a breath, then did it again, plunging deeper each time. Holly’s moves grew jerkier, and his did too.

They were so close, and the fire in him raged higher and higher. As a dragon, he was accustomed to a certain amount of heat swirling inside. But this was an inferno that threatened to consume him.

His dragon snorted. Everything about our mate consumes us.

“Oh,” she cried, about to tip over the edge, like him.

Mate, his dragon rumbled, high on her scent.

He might not be able to claim her with a mating bite — not yet. But he could do the next best thing. A dragon kiss.

He took a deep breath, tugged her down, and sealed his lips over hers. Then he exhaled, sending a puff of fire through her. At the same time, he thrust deeper than ever.

Holly shuddered, opening her mouth under his in a silent cry. He came at the same time, aching with the jolt of release. The flash of pain, the flood of pleasure. The overwhelming urge to hold her and never, ever let go.

Mate, his dragon murmured as Holly shuddered. Moments later, she slumped over him, spent.

Slowly, he pulled back from the kiss. Lord, had he ever felt anything that good?

Every thump of his heart carried a vision of delivering a mating bite — soon. And every shaky breath he took told him what a fool he’d been to leave her when he had.

He locked his arms around her, holding her against his chest. For all the joy in the moment, there was anger too. At himself. At his father. At destiny.

You will not let that woman hold you back, he remembered his father shaking a finger in his face. Then the finger had turned to the door with the bags he’d already packed. Get on out there. Let the military make a man out of you, boy.

Had it? In a way, yes. But that man was a hollow shell. That man would have failed in the end, because he kept a wall between his heart and his mind.

Holly murmured happily, stretching out her long limbs until she was snuggled comfortably. Eventually, she lifted her head and opened her mouth.

He held his breath, waiting for I love you. I need you. I missed you so much. The very words on the tip of his tongue. But her eyes heated, and she kissed him long and deep. In the end, the message was the same.

I love you. I need you. I missed you so much.

Then she covered his mouth and gave him her own dragon kiss, sending a puff of fire into his veins. He groaned, aching for more. A kiss like that wouldn’t bond them the way a mating bite did, but it did make their intentions clear.

Funny, how well that thought sat with him.

She’s mine, and we’re hers, his dragon crooned.

For the next breathless minutes, neither of them moved. They just clung to each other, heart rates slowing with every heavy beat.

“Pardon?” he murmured when Holly mumbled something into the sheets.

She rolled to her side and looped an arm over his chest, staying nice and close.

“Not bad, mister. Not bad.”

He laughed. “Not bad?”

“For starters, I mean. But we do have some time to make up for, you know.” Grinning, she rolled, taking him with her until she was on the bottom and he on top. “You get my gist?”

And just like that, every muscle in his body hardened, ready for more.

“I believe I do. But we’ll let you be the judge of that.”

She opened her mouth for one of her lightning-sharp replies, but he swallowed it in his next kiss. And the next, and the next. Then those petered out too, because their bodies were too busy rocking, their breath coming as heavy pants. Holly arched beneath him, crying for more.

More he was happy to give her again and again, as rain pattered the roof overhead.

Chapter Sixteen

Holly woke slowly, wondering what that sensation on her hand
