each other will be the best plan of action for the two of us,” he justifies.

“For right now, we don’t have a choice.” Just like yesterday, I feel woozy. His voice sounds like it’s coming from a tunnel and my last thought before the darkness reaches out to surround me is that I’m glad he’s here.

My mate.

I can see Vaughn’s eyes start to roll in the back of her head. As her body begins to sway, I reach out with one hand to put on her back and the other one to grab the baby. I am so glad that my bear’s wits are dead-on and strong. I stand and quickly scoop her into my arms then settle back in the chair she was in once I have the baby ensconced on my other arm. This child tells me through a mental link that her name is Emmaline. Why? How can this be happening? She is just a baby… a newborn, hours old. How can she already communicate so clearly to me? To us? Is this why Vaughn keeps passing out and tells me that she feels a lack of energy? I must find Gaia; the Faes have always been the oldest and wisest supernaturals. She’ll be able to shine some light on what is happening to my mate. I pick up my phone and press the button that will connect the call directly to Gaia. She’s on my speed dial, thank fuck. She quickly answers on the first ring, yet the way she answers, has me a bit jumpy.

“Hello, Sheriff, how is it I may assist you this early in the a.m.?”

“Gaia, as hastily as you answered, how did you even have the chance to realize that it was me calling you?”

“Remember I can sense things that are about to happen, so I knew when my phone rang that you were calling. Plus, I do have caller ID on my phone. What can I help you with today, sir?”

“I will be heading back to the island soon. I will also have with me Vaughn and an infant child named Emmaline. We will need a crib, or what do they call that smaller crib that women carry around with them?”

“A bassinet? A porta crib?” Gaia questions with a smartass edge to her tone.

“Yes, I believe that is what they are called. Please get one of those. I don’t want to let Vaughn or Emmaline out of my sight any time soon.”

“Is that so?” Gaia unusually and sarcastically inquires.

I don’t know whether or not the baby can be released, but I’ll feel better if she and Vaughn are nearby.

Vaughn

I once again find myself waking up on a couch and not realizing how I got where I am. Looking around, trying to figure out where on earth I am this time is confusing and causes a slight ache to my temples.

“Oh, welcome back to the living, Ms. Vaughn, we were beginning to wonder if we needed to bring in the doc,” Trigger frustratingly states.

“Well, I’m happy that you decided not to do that.” Changing the topic of conversation, I then ask him, “Where is Emmaline? Did you leave her at the hospital? Do you have a guard on her? What the hell is going on? How could you just leave her with nobody to protect her?” I’m spitting vile words out of my mouth. I can’t seem to help myself where it comes to that little girl and her safety.

“Calm down. Are you going to let me speak or get a word in edgewise?” Trigger asks inquisitively as he arches a brow.

“Well, then speak,” I bark out harshly once again before realizing what I’ve just said.

“Emmaline is in a bassinet over by my desk sleeping peacefully, or would you rather wake her up as you spout out all these damn questions?” Trigger growls out.

“Thank you, and sorry. It’s just that I have such a strong pull to her that I need, or perhaps want, her close to me. Knowing that our connection is what is draining me in one way or the other, for some odd reason, that doesn’t deter me from still wanting to hold tightly on to her,” I erratically state, my emotions all over the place.

“Noticed that myself at the hospital. I brought you both back to the precinct with me. I called ahead and had Gaia find the bassinet for Emmaline to lie in while we figure things out. The thought of leaving you two alone had my
