Finding Hope (Seaside Wolf Pack #6) - C.C. Masters Page 0,3

out his Glock, ready for whatever awaited us on the other side of the gateway.

Cody glanced at James with a wry twist of the lips. “Quinn called from a hotel. He would’ve given us a code phrase if the team was compromised.”

James flicked his eyes toward Cody in irritation, but he didn’t relax his stance or holster his weapon. James was always prepared for a potential fight. I had to tear my eyes away from him, because I was even more attracted to James when he went all dangerous and protective on me.

I closed my eyes so that I could concentrate. Previously, I’d located Sam by focusing on her magical signature, and I could do it again. I needed to have faith in myself if I wanted my magic to work.

I frowned when I got a vision of darkness blurring past me as if Sam were running outside, but maybe she was just blowing off steam after a difficult mission. My brow furrowed in concentration and sweat beaded on my forehead. I’d never made a gateway across such a considerable distance before, and I strained to keep hold of the magic I was using.

It took me longer than I thought, but I was targeting a location I’d never seen in person. It was much more complicated than making a simple path to the beach outside the house. I was sweating by the time it shimmered to life in front of us, but I did it.

“There!” I said proudly to the guys. “One gateway to South America.”

“Let me go first,” James demanded as he strode toward the gateway.

I rolled my eyes. I was the only one who had magic, so I was the best choice to go first. James growled behind me when I stepped through the gateway into the unknown without waiting for him.

“You constantly amaze me,” Cody said to me before he stepped out of the portal behind me.

I gasped when I took in the scene in front of me. Sam was kneeling beside Trevor, who had deep slashes across his chest. Blood soaked his shirt, and I could see a bone sticking out. Mike was slumped to the ground ten feet away, his hands pressed against a stomach wound, and Davis was injured in the shoulder.

I raised my hands and gathered my magic, readying for a fight. Trevor and his team were some of the best warriors I’d ever met. Anyone capable of taking them down was a serious threat.

“What happened here?” James asked as he moved in front of me and scanned the area for the threat. His weapon was pointed toward the ground, but his sharp eyes darted around, looking for potential targets.

I extended all of my magical senses, looking for anything or anyone that might be coming back to finish off my packmates. We needed to secure the scene before I could jump in and offer medical care.

“She’s gone,” Davis rasped. “We fought her off for now, but we need to get out of here before she returns.”

“Who?” I asked with a frown. One woman had done all of this? I lowered my hands cautiously as I shot a glance at James and shook my head. I couldn’t feel anyone close to us, but he’d have to keep watch while I switched my attention to healing the injured.

“Anna! It’s Trevor,” Sam cried out. “He needs to be healed. They all do, but he’s the worst.”

I pushed past James and quickly moved beside Trevor. If he had been human, this would be a mortal wound. Even with his superior healing abilities, I wasn’t sure Trevor would survive without magical intervention. Blood soaked through his clothing, and even the ground beside him was damp. I needed to move quickly to save his life.

“Where’s the rest of the team?” Cody asked urgently. “Are they injured as well?”

“Not here,” Mike replied weakly.

I knelt next to Trevor and held my hands over him as Cody continued to ask questions. I tuned them out and focused on weaving my magic along with Trevor’s to seal the wound. Healing worked best when you could use the patient’s own magic, so the body didn’t fight it as foreign. My first goal was to close the severed arteries that were the cause of his blood loss. The second was fixing his collapsed lung. Once I was confident he could breathe and wouldn’t bleed out, I concentrated on the rest of his wounds. He grunted as his ribs snapped back into place, and I fused
