then I need you to go with my guys somewhere, okay?”
Unease twists my stomach. “Is this about Stone?”
“Just go with them. Okay?”
His voice is so urgent, I can’t disagree. “Yeah, I’ll go with them. Promise.” I don’t know why I say that last word. It just slips from my mouth.
“What did you say?” Cole asks.
“Prom—”
A roar explodes on his end of the line, and there are several loud shatters—like someone is totaling the room he’s in—before the line goes dead.
I stare at the dark screen until the sound of a car coming up the road veers my attention away. The tires screech halt when they see us, and Wyatt, Lucas, and I run toward the car. The trunk pops open, and we fit two of our packs in the cramped space. Wyatt has to hold his while Lucas and I cling to each other in the backseat.
“Hospital,” I croak out.
The driver nods, not even looking up at us, and throws the car into gear, taking off. I grip the seat in front of us instead of freaking out. It’s at least a half-hour drive to the hospital, and we need to get there as quickly as we can.
Lucas settles into me and Wyatt places his hand on my leg for comfort, but I have all eyes on my lost stray. Seeing him hurt is driving a knife into my gut and twisting it. Lucas doesn’t deserve this, not after everything he’s been through.
“I’m going to keep calling Stone,” Wyatt hedges, voice hard. I can’t blame him all that much. We need him now and he’s not here.
Instead, I give Lucas a small smile and kiss his cheek. “How are you holding up?”
He doesn’t respond. His fingers barely graze over me, and my heart breaks a little. If something is seriously wrong with him and we can prove that Lance did this—or had other people do it for him since he’s a pussy—he is going down. I don’t care what needs to be done, and if I have to, I’ll unleash Cole and his Dragons to make sure that the threat is taken out for good. And that he suffers for it, too.
When we get to the hospital, Stone still hasn’t answered his phone. Wyatt’s called the main house, too, but no one’s answering that phone either.
The emergency room is a flurry of activity. As soon as we get someone to actually look at Lucas’ injury, we’re taken seriously, and things move like lightning. He gets taken to a room and seen by a doctor right away. It took me throwing a major fit but, hell, whatever works. Wyatt and I aren’t allowed back with him because we’re not family.
Instead, we sit in the waiting room, my feet bouncing up and down, while I glare at the nurse’s station. Wyatt takes a trip to the cafeteria and brings us some food that I barely taste, but I do eat because I’m freaking starving. We didn’t eat breakfast this morning and completed a major hike on zero calories consumed.
Wyatt places his arm around my shoulder. “We’re going to figure out who did this,” he promises, keeping his voice low. “We took the traps. They had to have left something behind. I know this sounds fucking crazy, but with the shit Lance has been in previously, we know what to do. We’re going to find out.”
“Except what if it is Lance? We’re not trusting him with those traps.”
“I agree,” Wyatt says. “Stone has contacts, too. Lance isn’t the only Jacobs who can handle this.”
I peek up at Wyatt. “Let’s hope Lance doesn’t have the pull to get our evidence shut down. If he does, we’ll ask Cole to do it.”
“Cole?” Wyatt questions, cringing. “I’m not sure he’s the best alternative.”
“He’s the only alternative.”
“Have you forgotten that his guys pulled a gun on me?”
“Of course not,” I tell him, and I have no idea why my brain is downplaying that now because it was a huge deal, but.... “I think we can trust him. He’s going to find Stone’s mom, and then he’s going to stop his fake wedding. When he’s done doing that, he’ll help us with the traps.”
“If he’s going to find Stone’s mom, he’s running out of time. Maybe if he does, I’ll see what you see, but for right now, I’m inclined to believe the four of us can’t trust anyone.”
I lean my head on his shoulder, closing my eyes for a brief moment. My father’s disappearance, school, everything else
