look that made me sick.

“Well, well, well,” Gia whispered to me.

“It’s not what you think,” I whispered back.

“Are you going to introduce me to your pretty friend here, Winter?” Talon asked.

He gave that classic bad boy grin.

I looked at Gia and she looked ready to pounce at him.

He’s a Troc! Gia, he’s a fucking Troc! Okay? This isn’t anything serious…

“Gia, this is Talon,” I said. “Talon, this is Gia. She lives two doors down. She’s a Bump like me.”

“I didn’t realize Winter was having company tonight,” Gia said.

“Neither did I,” I said. I curled my lip at Talon. “I was planning on having a girl’s night with Gia.”

“You can still have your night,” Talon said. He turned and sat down on the second step of the deck and stuck out his feet. “Don’t mind me. Do what you were doing. Have a drink. Talk. See where the night goes.”

“Really?” I asked.

“What?” Talon asked with a laugh. “Two pretty girls like both of you. Sitting on the beach. It’s romantic. Maybe someone slips someone a little kiss. See what it’s like, right? We’re at the perfect age for experimenting, you know? See what it tastes like to enjoy another woman. I know what it tastes like. I like it. You might like it too.”

“Doesn’t that screw you over then?” Gia asked.

Gia, stop it.

“Oh, no, darling,” Talon said to her. “You two can warm each other up. But I have the one thing you need. I’ll be there for you both. I’m willing to do that.”

“Okay, that’s enough of that,” I said. “Thanks for acting like a horny teen boy, Talon. That’s just what every girl dreams of.”

He shrugged his shoulders.

He just sat there so boldly.

I grabbed Gia’s hand and started to walk. “Let me get you out of here, Gia. I’m so sorry about this.”

“Don’t be,” she said.

As we walked by Talon, he smiled at Gia. “Goodnight, Gia.”

“Goodnight, Talon,” Gia said.

She was ultra-friendly. Way too friendly. Maybe it was just the vodka, but it wasn’t a good thing.

I got some distance between us and Talon.

“Gia, listen to me…”

“You fucking liar,” Gia said. “You’re fucking a Troc?”

“No,” I said. “No… I don’t even know…”

I sighed.

“He’s a Troc,” Gia said.

“Yeah. I know. I realize that now.”

“How did… I mean, hey, it’s cool with me. I don’t judge. I’ve always heard that Trocs are better than Bumps when it comes to that stuff.”

I shook my head.

I had no idea where to go with this.

“Gia, just… trust me, okay? I’m sorry I didn’t say anything. I went for a drive and Talon showed up. He thought something was wrong with me. I was just kind of thinking, you know?” Now I’m just pouring on the lies to the only friend I have. “We talked and I stupidly made a friend or something. I don’t know. He said something about coming over and I was just, like, whatever, and now he’s here.”

“Sure,” Gia said. “You’re a bad liar.”

“What?”

“You’re lying to me,” Gia said. She grabbed my face with her hands. “And it’s okay. I think somewhere in the back of your mind you remember tiny little things. You know that Trocs and Bumps don’t belong together. But I don’t care. Go have some fun. Let me know what it’s like. Maybe I can get a Troc too.”

Gia giggled.

She hugged me and then hurried away, running across the beach, so happy and free. And drunk.

And I had to turn around and go face Talon.

For a second I wondered what would happen if I poured the vodka on him and lit it on fire…

How’s that for a revengeful bitch?

Talon leaned forward and took the bottle of vodka from my hand.

“She’s beautiful,” Talon said to me with that same grin.

“Good to know,” I said. “She’s the only friend I have.”

“So she knows what’s going on?” Talon asked.

He took a swig of the vodka.

“No,” I said.

“She’s your friend but you didn’t tell her the truth?”

“Talon…”

“I’m just asking questions, darling,” he said. “I mean, it’s not much of a friendship if one person is lying.”

“Are you an expert on this stuff?” I asked.

“In reality, we have a better friendship,” he said. He slowly stood up and looked down at me. “I’m your best friend. Not her.”

“You are not my best friend,” I said.

Talon grinned yet again. “Oh, yes, I am. Unless you want to run over there and tell her the truth. I mean, why not? If you’re that close, who cares, right?”

“What do you want, Talon?”

“You know what I want,
