and walked with him toward the dining room table where Ford had set the majority of the food out. I took the hint and joined him and Chris. The sooner we ate, the sooner we could get things unloaded. I was surprised that Ford had suggested they come here, but then again, I knew he realized how much Sawyer had me tied up in knots for the past couple of weeks.

We quickly sat down for our small Thanksgiving dinner, and I felt something I hadn’t in several years. Grandma had been sick for a couple of years before she died, and so many things had been put aside while we focused on her. Last year was our first year without her, and it just seemed sad. This year, though, it felt like things were on the right track.

It was time to get up, but there was no way my body wanted to move. I was so much sorer than I’d let on yesterday, and both Chris and I were grateful that Hudson and Ford had helped unload the truck. I didn’t have much stuff, but what I had apparently was incredibly heavy.

But I wanted to get to the bookstore early so I could talk to Hudson. That meant I needed to drag my ass up out of bed and get in the shower. I flung the blankets back and did just that. By the time I left my bedroom a half hour later, Chris was filling a travel mug with coffee and looked like he was headed out the door.

“Going somewhere?”

“Good morning to you too. I’m off until Monday. I’m going to go out to the shops and get all of my Christmas shopping finished today.”

I winced. There was no way I wanted to be in Chris’s shoes. I was a people person, but even I knew that the day after Thanksgiving could and often did bring out the crazy side in people.

“Be careful, okay?”

“You know it. I’ll see you and Hudson later,” Chris said. I nodded and buried my head in the fridge, looking for the cream. When I came out with it and the cream cheese for the bagel I intended to eat, I jumped when Chris was right there next to me.

“Shit, man. I need to put a bell on you or something. What’s up?”

“I was thinking. I mean, I understand now why you were willing to just up and move here so quickly.”

“Huh?” It was too damn early for serious conversations, and I hadn’t even had coffee yet.

“Hudson.”

“What about him? He’s not the reason I moved here.”

“No?”

I shook my head and poured a healthy amount of cream into my own travel mug before adding coffee.

“Okay. I’m not so sure, but whatever. I was only going to say that if I had someone look at me like he does you, I’d want to stick around as well. See you later,” Chris said and then took off. I glanced to my right and watched him leave and wondered what he was talking about. It really was too early.

After I had my coffee and bagel ready and had cleaned up my mess, I grabbed everything else I needed and left the house. We’d dropped off the moving truck last night in their night drop, and I needed to remember to call and check on it later this morning, but for now, I had some things to discuss with Hudson. Mainly, the surprise visitor I had while in Breckenridge. Chris had been at his parents’, and I was alone, packing up my kitchen things when my dad had shown up.

I parked out back and sent off a text to Hudson, letting him know I was outside waiting. Eventually there might need to be some sort of discussion about a key for the door, but for now, I was okay with waiting for him to answer the thing. He was never far, and I only had to wait as long as it took him to get to the door. Which always seemed…there he was…quick.

I climbed out of my Jeep and walked to the back door where Hudson was half hanging out. He smiled at me, and I walked right up to him and wrapped my arms around his waist before I leaned in and gave him a kiss. We kept it sweet and simple, something I was grateful for because we were standing in the open door and it was cold outside.

“You’re really early today. Everything okay?”

Seven thirty was early when
