told him.

“Did you know?” Ford asked, looking at Hudson.

“I did. But I didn’t know you were ordering pizza or I would have made sure you ordered a bucket of chicken instead of just wings.”

“Shit, I’m sorry. I can order it now and have them bring it,” Ford said as he pulled out his phone.

“No. Seriously. I mean it. I’ll eat a few wings, some fruit and vegetables, and that’ll be about all I can handle. I ate a cheeseburger and fries when we went to the home improvement store, and ask Hudson—I only ate about half.”

“Is that why? I thought maybe you just didn’t like the food,” Hudson asked.

“No, it was great. I’m just working back up to eating regular meals. Even Chris has mentioned it.”

When they finally accepted that I was okay with a few wings and then the other offerings, we enjoyed our meal. We talked about the upcoming changes to the store and the holiday season.

After we ate, we went back down to the bookstore, and I discovered that doing mortar for tiles wasn’t nearly as fun—or sexy—as any of the videos I’d watched made it appear to be. It was messy. And it got on everything. And I’d been told that most likely it wouldn’t wash out completely unless I did so as soon as I got home. Which sucked hairy balls since these were my favorite jeans.

We’d finished in record time and had an oil heater near the counter, adding warmth to the area. Hudson had upped the temperature in the bookstore for the evening and night as well. Wells had said that both would help the mortar dry and set up quicker. Then tomorrow night we could grout the seams and then clean it up after that dried. All in all, it was a much more difficult process than I had anticipated.

“Are you sure you don’t want to come back upstairs? I can throw your jeans in the washer for you. I have some sweats you could wear in the meantime,” Hudson said after Ford and Wells had left. We were standing at the back door, my back to it, Hudson standing in front of me with one hand resting just above my head on the door. It was so very tempting. Especially since the door to Hudson’s place was just to my right.

“Honestly, I’d love to, but I’m afraid that if I do, we’ll end up in bed together, and I’m thinking that maybe that’s not the best thing right now.” I couldn’t believe I was actually saying that, but I didn’t want to just jump into bed with Hudson. If I wanted quick sex, I was sure I could find that somewhere else. But I wanted something more. And maybe that could be with Hudson.

Hudson dropped his arm and took a step back.

“That probably sounded the complete opposite from what I intended. Trust me, I want you, and I definitely want to ride you if you’ll let me.”

“Yeah? I’d certainly let you as long as I can suck you off at some point.”

I groaned and closed my eyes because that sounded so damn tempting.

“How about a date first?” I asked. When I reopened my eyes, Hudson was close enough that if I just barely moved, my lips would touch his.

“Fine. Tomorrow I’ll take you to that festival. Then we’ll see what happens from there.”

I didn’t get to respond because Hudson’s lips were on mine again. I immediately opened my mouth, and he didn’t disappoint. The man could kiss, and I wanted to know what all he could do with that tongue of his.

I moaned when he threaded his fingers into my hair and tilted my head exactly how he wanted. I could do nothing but hang on to the front of his shirt and let him map out my mouth with his tongue. I felt a shiver go through my body, and my nipples tightened seconds before Hudson ran his tongue against the roof of my mouth again.

When his lips gently rubbed against mine, I sucked in a deep breath, trying to regain some sense of where I was. Why was it that I said no to going upstairs?

“Umm…”

Hudson smiled but took a small step back; his hands were still in my hair, but he quickly slid them down to cup the sides of my face.

“Until tomorrow, then. We’ll do grout, then go to the festival and see what happens after. Sound good?”

“Umm…” I couldn’t talk. He expected me to talk? I
