him know I was back. Sawyer turned and looked at me with what I’d say was uncertainty.
“Yeah, so…that was unexpected. Umm…are you umm, always like that? With your cousin, I mean?”
“Ford and I don’t fight over men if that’s what you mean. Nor do we date someone who’s dated the other. Is that what you mean?”
“Umm, kinda. Twice now you’ve been a bit possessive when it comes to me around him.”
I nodded as I blew out a breath. “Yeah. You’re right. I’ll admit that I’ve been incredibly attracted to you since the moment I saw you.”
“Yeah?” Sawyer asked as a smile lit up his face. He reached out his hand and gently placed it on my side.
“Yes. But you were—are—an employee, and it’s probably not a good thing to get involved with someone who works for you.”
When the smile immediately fell from Sawyer’s face, I knew I’d misspoken.
“Hang on,” I said, reaching for him and wrapping my arms around his back. “You work for me, yes. But up until very recently, I wasn’t even sure you were going to be here for long.” I waited until he was looking directly at me before continuing. “And then there’s the friend thing.”
“Friend thing?”
“Yeah. The one you’re staying with.” I cleared my throat and went on. “I wasn’t sure if you two were actually just friends or more. I didn’t want to move in on someone else’s guy, so…”
Sawyer smirked. “Okay, so Chris and I are most definitely just friends. Anything with him would be like doing something with my brother, so no. I’m not seeing anyone. Yet. I’ve let my family completely run my life for the past five or so years, and therefore I have no life and am on the verge of developing an ulcer.” Sawyer took a step back out of my arms, reached down, and absently rubbed his stomach, and I wondered if it was a habit now or if his stomach actually pained him.
“Yes, about that. Are you okay?” I asked. “You’re rubbing your stomach. Did you not eat enough today? Do you need something? We could run upstairs and grab a snack.”
Sawyer’s eyes hooded, and he gave me a smile that I definitely wanted to see one morning when we woke up together.
“As much as I’d love to run upstairs with you, I’m not sure that’s the best thing to do right now. Your kiss is still quite vivid in my mind, and I’m not sure I can keep my hands to myself.”
“How is that an issue? Do you honestly think I’m going to complain?” I pulled him back to me before I leaned down and ran my nose up the side of his neck. “I wouldn’t mind if you didn’t keep your hands to yourself. Especially not if I was allowed to explore as well.”
Sawyer groaned but tilted his head to the side, giving me more room. Just as I started running a line of kisses from under his ear toward his mouth, there was a knock on the front door of the store, and I growled in frustration.
“What is it with the interruptions tonight?” I grumbled.
“I bet that’s the pizza and wings. We should grab it and maybe stash it somewhere so it won’t get too cold,” Sawyer said.
“You’re right. Come on. We’ll take it upstairs, and I’ll put it in the oven so it can stay somewhat warm. I mean, it’s the least I can do since he was thoughtful enough to order supper for us.” Not that pizza wasn’t good lukewarm or even cold. It was. But the chicken wings, they were a different story.
I tugged Sawyer along with me as I headed to the front door. Sure enough, when it was in clear view, I saw one of the delivery drivers for Marco’s Pizzeria and quickly unlocked and opened the door for him.
“Hey, Mr. James. I have the pizzas and wings you ordered.”
I tried to remember the kid’s name, but it was no use. I was drawing a complete blank, so I went with faking it. “Thanks. Did Ford pay for everything yet?” I asked. I pulled out my wallet, ready to at least tip the kid, who couldn’t be more than eighteen or nineteen.
“He did, yes. Here’s your pizzas,” he said as he handed the two boxes to Sawyer, who was standing beside me. He piled a large bucket on top and a smaller one that I knew was filled with various dipping sauces.
