wins, and I need answers.

However, before I can interrogate him, Damon distracts me by rubbing his thumb over my chin. “I’m going to try something to see if it can jog your memory. It worked once before.”

“Okay?” I respond, apprehensive.

I’m too shocked to move as he leans in and presses a gentle kiss there.

My lips tingle with envy. “You missed.”

He chuckles. “No, I didn’t. You still don’t remember anything?”

I shake my head, and I hate the way his hopeful expression gets replaced with disappointment. “But earlier when that shock thing happened… I think it zapped some sense into me for a second. Can you do it again?”

Horrified, he jerks back. “Absolutely not. That was a mistake. I won’t hurt you on purpose.”

“It wasn’t that bad. It’s worth a try.”

“I’ll make you a deal.” A sly smile appears on his lips. “If I do this, I get to kiss you.”

If he’s trying to deter me, that’s the wrong tactic. “Kiss me where?”

“Wherever the spark ignites. It happens at random, so there’s no telling where it’ll be.”

His warning causes a flutter in my stomach. There are so many possibilities. I guess I’d take another chin peck, but I wish he’d go up an inch higher. My nipples tighten when I think about his mouth there.

Biting my lip, I blush, already knowing I’m going to say yes.

There’s a benefit to not remembering who I am. A certain freedom comes with it. I’m not sure if bargaining for kisses is out of character for me, but I’m on board with the idea.

I straighten my shoulders. “Sure, why not? Go for it.”

“Strike,” Damon says flatly.

A small shock zaps the tip of my nose. Nothing happens.

Damon moves in to kiss the spot, but he’s gone too quickly. “Anything?”

I shake my head. “It was more intense the time before.”

“That’s because I said it with more conviction. The more you mean it, the stronger the consequences.”

“Well.” I throw out a hand. “Mean it.”

“Fine.” He works his jaw before shouting, “Striking strike strike!”

I’m pelted with three pops—cheek, shoulder, and neck. This time my brain kicks into motion. Insignificant recollections come and go. A yellow karate belt. A maroon car. The smell of chlorine and the weightlessness of being submerged in water.

“Well?” Damon prompts. “I can tell that did something.”

Frustrated, I shake my head. “It’s just pictures of things or feelings, and I can’t seem to hold onto them for long.”

“Don’t stress about it.” Picking up my hand, he links our fingers. “Right now, it’s time for me to collect.”

He goes in the order the shocks happened. First, he kisses my cheek. Then he slowly dips down to my shoulder. I can feel the warmth of his lips through the thin fabric of the gown. When he gets to my neck, his mouth hovers an inch away from my skin for two full breaths.

As his hand spasms around mine, he sniffs. I don’t have time to be embarrassed about how bad I probably smell because his lips connect with my pulse point.

My mouth drops open, and my inhale gets caught in my throat.

Because this kiss is different than the others. His tongue flicks against me before he sucks on my flesh. Heat rushes to every area of my body, and something swoops in my stomach. My toes curl, and I rub my thighs together to quell a sudden ache between my legs.

My lungs are frozen. I can’t get air, and I think I might be totally fine with never breathing again as long as he keeps doing this.

Unfortunately, he breaks away all too soon.

We’re both panting as Damon pulls back and removes his hand from mine.

The teacup is shaking in his grasp when he brings it to my mouth. “Drink.”

I gently push it away. “Are you a king?”

“I am.”

I narrow my eyes at his head. “Where’s your crown?”

“I don’t wear it often. It’s gawdy and it doesn’t do good things for my hair.”

I can’t tell if he’s being serious or not. He couldn’t possibly be that vain. On second thought, maybe he is. If I looked like him, I’d be full of myself, too.

“And you’re the king of where, exactly?”

“You’re doing too much talking and not enough filling your belly. I’ll make you another deal…” His lips curl up in the most enticing way, and now that I know what that mouth can do, I’m about to say yes to anything involving more kisses.

“Yes?” The anticipation is killing me.

“I’ll tell you anything you want, as long as you take a
