The Fae King's Dream (Between Dawn and Dusk #2) - Jamie Schlosser Page 0,142
tends to be quite the attraction, and the mystical creature loves being fawned over. Griffin rides are very popular with the kids at our festivals.
As soon as Dani gets within ten feet of me, I feel a burst of happiness.
Ah. This is probably the real reason Damon invited them. Yes, they’re our family and we love them, but Dani’s power comes in handy on a sad day. Her ability to raise others’ spirits makes her presence impossible to resist.
When she opens her arms for a hug, I bend down to embrace her.
“Is Torius here?” the almost-four-year-old whispers in my ear, too quiet for anyone else to hear.
I pull back to gaze at her hopeful face. Aside from her lavender eyes, she looks so much like Quinn. Even though freckles are rare among the fae, she has three brown specks on her left temple.
“No. He’s been in the Day Realm for years.” Confused by the sudden stab of disappointment I feel from Dani, I smooth some wispy hairs away from her face. “Why do you ask?”
Pressing her lips together, she backs away before recovering with a grin. She merrily skips back to her parents like the short conversation never happened.
Quinn’s wearing her usual jeans, but her T-shirt’s been modified. There are holes cut out over her shoulders for her wings, which are fully developed now.
My eyes fall to her flat stomach. She doesn’t know it yet, but she’s going to get the twins she’s been gunning for. Soon.
Kallum lets out a series of excited grunts and practically tumbles out of Damon’s hold as he wakes. Sleepily, he toddles over to Dani. Seeing him excited to be with her makes me realize we should do these get-togethers more often.
“Will Zander be here, too?” I grab Damon’s beltloops to tug him closer.
Caressing my upper arms, he shakes his head. “He’s trying to fix the next crisis. A large experimental facility just got busted, and he’s busy getting the captives back to their homes.”
Poor guy. I feel bad for the Day Realm king. Illegal Glow production and human trafficking continues at an alarming rate in his kingdom. To make matters worse, we’ve gotten reports of unrest among his citizens. Many are displeased with life under Zander’s rule, though it’s no fault of his own.
Once a year, he comes around to fly with Talon in his shifted form. I suppose being the only griffin shifter in all of Valora can be lonely and, unfortunately, there’s been no sign of his mate. No matter how much Astrid and I try, no spell will reveal any answers. I’ve even had her electrocute me a couple times to see if we can trigger a vision.
Maybe the solution lies in Merina, who’s still MIA. Occasionally, Damon tries to get into her dreams, but he’s had no luck. It’s probably too much to hope she ended up in some fatal situation, wherever she went.
“Come on, Aunt Whitley.” Dani motions me over while dancing under a horde of twinkling bugs. “Let’s catch some fireflies.”
Kirian’s using his powers to draw the blinking bugs to one spot, and Kallum laughs when one lands on his nose.
“I’ll be right there,” I say, before crooking a finger at Damon. When he leans down, I whisper, “Fine. We’ll have a family day. But tonight, you’re all mine.”
He lovingly nips my chin. “Don’t worry. I’ll make all your dreams come true.”
I give him a look filled with adoration. “You already have.”
