Expired Getaway (Last Chance County #7) - Lisa Phillips Page 0,27

was comprised of former covert agents, Special Forces soldiers, or anyone else with a high-risk job who couldn’t just walk away. People whose lives would be in danger for the rest of their days. The kind who needed an alias to live under, one that was legit and would withstand the test of time. They needed a support system and official documentation.

It was a lengthy process, but the thanks she’d received from each client she had worked with made it all worth it.

“He could be after you.”

Millie was the one who had indicated they were both in danger. She nodded now, probably because she knew Bridget was right.

Bridget continued, “Make sure you watch your back.”

“I will. You need to do the same.” Millie stood. “I need to get to my real errand, the one I told Eric I was doing. If I find anything out, or if Sasha does, one of us will let you know.”

“Any idea how I can get in contact with your guy who verified the phone system was secure?”

They couldn’t use satellites to pinpoint Clarke’s location. The cell phones they used didn’t even show up on the system most people used, with cell towers and GPS triangulation. It would be tricky to get into Clarke’s phone, but there were people in the world who knew how to do this.

Surely it could be done.

Millie nodded. “There’s a couple people I can call. This town has a private security team that lives locally and runs missions all over the world. You’ve met them. They have a tech person they use when it’s ultrasensitive. And then locally there’s a guy as well, one who could probably hack our system if I asked him.”

“You think we’d get a location? Or do you think he’s already thought of that and taken measures?”

“I think it’s worth a try, at least.” Millie tipped her head to the side. “And I have something for you to do as well.”

Bridget headed for her suitcase and found the boots she hadn’t unpacked yet. Bending over hurt a lot, but she tried to hide it. The last thing she needed was for Millie to bench her.

The sooner she got on the move, the sooner she would be back here and safe. The idea of being out and around town, possibly running into Aiden all over again, made her want to crawl back under the comforter and hide.

Not just because she wanted to avoid the emotions that came from seeing him, but also because being nowhere near Aiden kept him safe from Clarke.

And all the other threats she faced.

Bridget zipped up the boots. “Where am I going?”

“Head over to Tate’s office. He and his wife took my kids on vacation for New Year’s, so he’s not there—he’s headed to Hawaii. Get on his computer and see if you can pull up the log for our database. Find out if anyone has tried to access it since the office went up in flames. After that, call over to the local police department and speak to whoever investigated what happened at the accountant’s office. Make up some story like you’re a reporter, or one of our clients. Find out if they might know anything they’re not willing to say.”

“Copy that.”

Millie leaned over and hugged Bridget. After Bridget got over her surprise, she hugged her friend—and boss—back. “I’ll call you later.”

“Be safe.”

Bridget watched her friend through the blinds. Millie jogged to the end of the townhouses and around the corner. She’d probably parked her car in the grocery store parking lot and walked here. Thankfully, it was less than a mile.

Her town. Her hometown. Too bad all that was left here for her were nightmares and grief.

Bridget drove down Main Street to the private investigative offices Tate rented. She tried to think about him and not her father. There was nothing she could do about the fact her dad was dead.

Tate, on the other hand, had never been anything except helpful and supportive. The night Millie had found her walking along the highway, broken and bleeding, Tate had been the one who helped Millie get Bridget out of town.

She would always be grateful to them for that.

Bridget circled the block three times to make sure no one was following her. Then she parked two streets away and pulled on a ball cap before heading to the back door. Tate hid a key for the times he forgot his, but she also needed the code Millie had texted her. The two used
