snorted. “The milk is out of date anyway. We’ll grab something on the way out.” He made a note to grab a few groceries today. It might help entice her to stay without having to fuck her to exhaustion for it. Not that he minded that.

“Sounds like a plan,” she muttered around her mug.

Ethan’s phone rang, and he glanced at it, anxious to talk to Rocky but not wanting to have the conversation in front of Brett. He didn’t want her worrying about the consequences of going to the club, and he didn’t need to scare her when she seemed to be taking the threat to her safety in stride. He ignored the call, sending a quick text to let Rocky know he’d call back in a few minutes. “I’ve got some club business to discuss. Can I meet you at the clubhouse?”

She nodded. “You want me to grab you some food?”

He nodded. “Grab a twenty from my wallet. It’s on the nightstand. My treat.”

She beamed at him. “Who would have thought someone like me could snag a gentleman in wolf’s clothing?” She sashayed off toward the bedroom, and Ethan chewed the inside of his cheek, willing himself to stay put. He had things to do and couldn’t spend anymore time wrapped up in those gorgeous limbs of hers.

Twenty minutes later, she was out the door, and he dialed Rocky back, putting him on speaker while he dressed. “What’s up, bro?” Rocky asked.

Ethan didn’t beat around the bush. “Dennis took it upon himself to threaten Brett yesterday. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do about it.”

“What did he say?” Rocky asked, suddenly all business. He could flip a switch like that in a heartbeat, and that was one of the things that made him so valuable as a friend.

Ethan explained the interaction while Rocky listened quietly. “I can’t be with her all the time, or I’d tail her myself. I have other things to focus on. I’m just starting to get a welcome from the boys around here, and I think the information is going to start flowing. And I have to keep on Tony’s ass because we still have shit about what happened to Martin.”

“Tony’s falling down on the job. Take care of him. He should have something by now, if he’s really focused on this job and nothing else,” Rocky advised. He’d worked with Tony before and knew the private investigator could do better than this. “As far as Brett’s protection, I know what you’re thinking, and you’re probably right. The axe is going to hover over your neck regarding your personal involvement. But I’ve seen Corey get past it before. I think it’s more important you follow protocol this time, show your loyalty and dedication to the rules. And let him put a security detail on her.”

Ethan didn’t like it, but he’d figured that would be Rocky’s advice. Taking a different path would be selfish, putting his own desires ahead of Brett’s safety, and that could ultimately hurt not only her but her club. And by extension, the Flames and even the Kings. “I guess I knew that already. I just needed to hear it from someone outside the situation.”

“I get it. Look, Ethan, I have nothing that you don’t have. You’re smart, but you need to trust yourself some more. Only difference is that I’ve just put myself on the front line and taken a lot of risks. You’re just hitting that point now.” He chuckled, and there was humor in his voice as he added, “Not to mention you’re finding out what it’s like to feel enough for a girl that you’d say fuck the consequences if it meant keeping her safe and happy. You know I get that. A lot of us do. Deep down, even Corey understands that. You think for one second that, if Regan were in this kind of trouble, he’d handle things any differently than you are?”

No, he didn’t. In fact, with the way the president felt about his old lady, he’d probably be a lot less level headed than Ethan had managed so far. “I hear you. Alright, I can’t get home anytime soon, but something needs to happen fast. Can you let Corey know I need to talk to him?”

“I’m on my way in now. I’ll have him give you a call. Keep your chin up, bro. You’ve got this under control. And I think you deserve to be happy.”

“Thanks, bro.” Ethan hung up, shaking his
