Entrapment (Thor's Dragon Rider #3) - Katrina Cope Page 0,46

into a more comfortable position. “A Valkyrie whose heart is full of peace, love, and understanding, always wanting to see the good in people. And with her is her dragon, who carries the same beliefs.”

The knowledge Thor holds of my friends surprises me. I know he can only be talking about one Valkyrie and her bonded dragon.

A soft voice sounds just behind me, almost a whisper. “Listen to that. He’s saying such nice things about Naga.”

Turning, I find Eir hugging Naga around the neck. I start briefly, not having realized they were there. They were so silent, sneaking up on me.

“Eir. I'm so glad to see you.” Relieved, I wrap my arms around her neck and stroke Naga’s blue cheek, smiling when the dragon leans into my hand. “You’re so quiet. I didn’t hear you two sneak up.”

Eir shrugs. “We’ve perfected the art of walking without being heard—well, most of the time. It was easy while you were distracted. You probably heard us but ignored the sound.”

I squeeze her hand, whispering, “Thank you. I’m ecstatic to have a friend accompanying me this time.” Naga catches my eyes with his big blue ones. “Two friends,” I correct myself.

Eir leans to one side. “I wouldn't be surprised if Odin banishes me also for going with you.” Catching my worried gaze, she shrugs. “It’s something we’ll tackle together. Besides, I want to come. When would I ever say no to learning more about peaceful magic?”

I chuckle. “Never.”

Naga nudges me from the side with his nose. Naga’s excited to be coming. Naga has heard much about this land.

I frown. “Oh. What’s that?”

Naga has heard that there are peaceful dragons somewhere in one of these realms. Perhaps this is the place. Naga would like to meet friendly dragons, not like these dragons that want to breathe fire and fight all the time. His gaze turns to Elan. Like the emperor dragons.

The scales between Elan’s eyes push together in a frown. Naga, my breed is nothing compared to the dragon we ran into in Muspelheim. That dragon was na-a-asty!

Naga’s eyes widen.

“That's true,” I say. “But that dragon remains in Muspelheim. It wouldn’t be able to survive anywhere else. It would destroy everything it touched.”

I catch Eir’s shocked expression.

“It’s a story I’ll tell you on our travels,” I say. “I’m glad to have you come with us, Naga. I couldn’t think of any better companions than you two.”

Catching Thor’s attention, I say, “If you manage to speak to your father, please explain that I'm sorry. I didn't mean to set Loki free, and I'll do my best to bring him back. Asgard is my home. It holds all my friends and favorite gods. I’ll always stand by and protect them.”

Thor places a hand on my upper arm. “I'll do my best. You know I will, Kara. I want you back in Asgard. I have a lot more planned for you, and I’m not going to give up on you yet. I can see your loyalty even if my stubborn father can’t.”

I pull away from Thor’s intense gaze and connect with the smiling blond god. Freyr stares at both Eir and me alternately for several moments, wearing a broad smirk.

I'm not sure if I want to cringe or be happy.

“Shall we get started?” the blond god asks.

My expression doesn't change.

He seems to realize my apprehension and inclines his head. “Do not worry, battle maidens. I'll do as instructed. I’ll protect you and lead you through my realm. I think you’ll find my followers very accommodating.” He holds out one hand as an invitation.

Without grasping his hand, I step forward hesitantly. “Okay. Let's do this. I'm keen to expand my magic.”

Acknowledgments

Thank you to all of the creators of literature and websites who have spent time writing about Norse Mythology. Even though at times there has been contradicting information, it has been an interesting study. After all, of course a goat produces mead, and a dragon gnaws at the roots of the Yggdrasil, unhindered, threatening the existence of the nine realms attached to the world tree. Plus, there are many other “believable” tales told.

Norse mythology is such an impressive set of tales that I have incorporated some and invented others to create Kara and Elan’s story.

I am touched by the enormous amount of support I have received from my immediate family. My husband has been a helpful first reader and, at times, been an excellent motivator, with hints of ideas to help me through the blanks. The support from my three sons has also been overwhelming. They have spent years putting up with my head in the clouds, thinking about the next plot twist or story, along with many hours spent working on my books and keeping in touch with my readers.

A big thank you to my extended family, who support me being a book enthusiast.

A huge thank you to my editor, Kelly Reed, her editing and writing tips, and my Proofreader, Irene S, for picking up the things we missed.

Thank you to all of my readers who have loved my work, and continue to read my stories.
