The Enemy - Kelsey Clayton Page 0,71
and the doorbell rings. "You go see who that is, and I'll get this going. I'm starving."
As I walk out of the room, I can't help but smile. He's not acting like an asshole. He's not encroaching on my personal space. He's just being himself, and I happen to like that version of him.
Pulling open the door, my heart drops at who I find on the other side. Kellan stands there, holding a bouquet of pink roses, with a sheepish grin on his face.
"What the fuck are you doing here?"
The grin vanishes in an instant. "I just want to talk."
I shake my head. "You had every chance in the world to talk, while we were together. Instead, you went and fucked Skye while I slept down the fucking hall."
He winces at my tone. "I'm sorry, Lennon. I really am. I was really disappointed about not getting into Vanderbilt, and she was there."
"Seriously? That's your million dollar excuse?" I scoff.
"Len?" Cade's voice comes from down the hall. "Who's at the door?"
He comes around the corner, and the second he sees Kellan standing there, he goes ballistic. Kellan nods at him, trying to avoid a fight, but it's useless.
"What the hell do you want?" Cade sneers.
Kellan sighs. "I just came to talk to Lennon."
"Yeah, well, she doesn't want to fucking talk to you."
My ex becomes defensive. "I don't think that's for you to decide."
Cade laughs dryly and looks over at me. "Do you want to talk to this piece of shit?"
"No," I reply firmly.
He smiles at my answer. "Hear that? She doesn't want anything to do with you, so it's time to go."
Kellan rolls his eyes. "As usual, Cade Knight is calling the shots. Whatever, she was a shitty fucking girlfriend anyway."
As he goes to walk away, Cade grabs the back of his shirt and pulls him back. The two of them fall to the ground in a cluster of punches being thrown. As I watch Kellan land a particularly rough hit to Cade's lip, I shriek. The mere thought of him getting hurt is enough to bother me, but seeing it first hand is terrifying.
"Stop!" I shout, but neither of them listen.
Looking around, I find a vase that looks easy enough to replace. I grab it and lift it over my head, before slamming it down onto the ground. The porcelain shatters into a bunch of tiny pieces, but it distracts them enough for me to separate them. I pull Cade off of Kellan and push him up against the wall. He looks like he already wants to go for another round, but I won't let him.
"Cade," I try. "Cade!"
Finally, he rips his eyes away from Kellan and looks at me. His bottom lip is cut and bleeding, and it looks like his eye is already starting to bruise, but he softens under my attention.
"Stop, please. For me."
Kellan laughs from behind me, and my whole body tenses.
"Oh, isn't that cute," he quips.
"Get the hell out of here, Kellan."
Another chuckle. "Wow, Lennon. I never took you as someone who would be into incest. You must be really desperate."
Cade moves to go after him again, but I beat him to it.
"No," I roar, turning around to face my ex. "You don't get to judge what I do. You had me. I was yours, and I intended for it to stay that way. But that wasn't enough for you. You're the one that cheated. You're the one that paraded Skye around like you were proud of the betrayal. You ruined us, not me. So fuck you. You don't get to judge me."
He looks taken back by my words before sighing and walking back out the door. Once he's gone, I turn around and focus on Cade. His lip looks bad, but I can't tell if he needs stitches with all the blood.
"Come on. We need to get that cleaned up."
I grab his hand and pull him into the nearest bathroom, thankful that he isn't fighting me on it. I take the first aid kit out from under the sink and look through it.
"Thank you," I tell him. "You didn't need to defend me like that back there."
As I move toward him with the wet gauze in my hand, he grabs my wrist and halts my movements. "No way in hell was I going to let him say those things about you. Not ever."
I look away from his intense stare. "No offense, but I think you've said worse."
He grabs my chin and forces me to
