The Enemy - Kelsey Clayton Page 0,33

as the truth comes out. “Unbelievable.”

“Len, baby. Don't listen to her.” Kellan starts to cross the room, but I stop him before he can get too close.

“Stay the fuck away from me before I smack you,” I growl. “Everyone told me I was too good for you. I should have listened.”

That seems to strike a nerve. “Too good for me? Why, because you're some innocent little virgin?” My jaw drops, but he doesn't stop. “Maybe if you would have put out, I wouldn't have gone elsewhere.”

Everything in me snaps, and I take off toward him, only for Colby to catch me halfway. I kick and scream as he carries me to the other side of the room and pins me to the wall. He's caging me in, with his cologne taking over my senses, but it's not the lustful feeling one would expect. I feel safe.

Kellan scoffs. “You're all on me because I slept with Skye, like you haven't been fucking Colby behind my back this whole time.”

I struggle to move again, but Colby pins my wrists to the wall. He whips his head around to look at Kellan.

“Get the fuck out of here, before I let her go.”

He mumbles something about this being bullshit as he storms out the door. As soon as he's gone, I feel a little calmer, until Skye tries to talk to me.

“Please don't hate me,” she begs.

I scowl at her, unsure if I want to punch her in the face or throw her off a balcony. “How long?”

“What?”

“How long have you been fucking my boyfriend behind my back?” I elaborate.

She sighs and shakes her head. “It doesn't matter.”

“You don't get to tell me what matters!”

Her whole body flinches from my tone. “Since the party at Oakley's.”

I cross my arms over my chest. “You mean the one I left because I wasn't feeling well?” She nods. “That was over a month ago!”

“I know, and I'm so sorry.”

Raising a hand to stop her, I look away. “I don't want to hear it. Just go. If you hurry, you can get a ride home from Kellan.”

She drops her head and walks out the door. Tessa comes over to hug me, and my eyes meet Cade's from over her shoulder.

“You knew.”

He rubs the back of his neck. “Uh, yeah.”

I leave Tessa's arms and walk over, shoving him in the chest. “You knew, and you didn't tell me!”

“You never gave me a chance!”

“Oh, that's bullshit and you know it,” I sneer. “The only reason I'm not kicking your ass out of here is my dad, but don't get it confused. I want nothing to do with you, either.”

THE WAVES CRASH AGAINST the shoreline as the breeze blows through my hair. I don't know how long I've been sitting out here, but I'm numb. So many different things are running through my mind, I can barely formulate a coherent thought. The range of emotions is intense.

Anger.

Betrayal.

But the most confusing of all—relief.

It's not that I didn't have feelings for Kellan, but it's like I spent two years painting this picture of him in my head. When he wasn't what I thought he was, I tried to make it work. The fact that I have yet to shed a single tear speaks volumes.

“Are you going to be okay?” Tessa asks. She's been sitting with me since I came out here, just being someone to lean on if I need it.

I nod. “Yeah, they both just better hope I don't see them again. Leaving for New York can't come soon enough.”

“Hey,” she whines. “Don't say that. I don't want you to leave.”

Chuckling, I rest my head on her shoulder. “Oh, shush. You know I'm going to miss you.”

Standing up, she brushes the sand off her clothes. “Okay, no more talking about leaving. You need sleep. Brady will be here in like four hours.”

The two of us make our way back inside, hand in hand, and I've never been so glad to have her as my best friend. Everyone seems to be asleep except for Colby, who's sitting in the kitchen waiting for us.

“You want me to wait?” Tess questions.

I shake my head. “It's okay. You go to bed.”

She gives me one more hug and disappears up the stairs. I let out a heavy sigh as I sit down on the stool next to Colby. He wraps an arm around me for comfort.

“Do you want me to kick his ass?”

Chuckling tiredly, I glance toward him. “Possibly. I'll let you know.”

He finishes his beer and
