The Enemy Duet - M.E. Clayton Page 0,42

girlfriend, freshening up. We’re just the sad saps waiting out here for them.”

Bernard laughed good-naturedly and surprisingly handed out a genuine tidbit despite his slimy ways. “Never forget, my boy, if you don’t wait on her there’s always someone else that’s willing to.”

Will nodded in agreement. “That’s why we’re standing here, Bernard.”

“Well, we’ll let you guys get on with it then. See you guys later.” He stepped away, but Crystal lingered behind.

The next thing I knew, she was pressing her body up against mine whispering in my ear, “The next time you find yourself on the East Coast, give me a call. Your West Coast girlfriend never needs to know about it.” I saw her eyes dart behind me and the smile that stretched across her plastic face told me everything I needed to know about where Fiona was.

She patted my chest. “See you around, handsome,” she cooed, and I watched as she walked away from us.

FUCK!

I turned around to see a very pissed off Vicky and a...calm?...Fiona walking towards us.

Vicky wasted no time, only she directed her bullshit towards Will, which threw me off a little. She nodded her head in the same direction as Crystal. “If you hurry, you can still get at that, Will. My tits are natural and normal sized, so I can’t, nor would I, compete with that.”

Will grabbed her by her arm with enough force to surprise the shit out of me. “Don’t get it twisted, Stems, if I wanted that, I’d have that. She’s not that difficult to get. I’m here with you and I haven’t said or done anything to give you the impression that I want to be here with anyone else, so knock your shit off now.”

I lifted both brows at him. Their interaction seems a little extreme for a first blind date. Vicky yanked her arm out of his grasp and stood looking livid and beautiful. Will’s going to have issues letting her get away, no doubt.

I decided to stop being a coward and looked down at Fiona. She was watching their interaction with the same surprised look that I had. She must have sensed me looking down at her because she turned her attention towards me and...smiled??

Crystal was all over me and not Will, but here we were, with Vicky getting in his ass about it and Fiona seemingly unaffected by it all.

“I need a drink and not a classy glass of sophistication you got these servers offering. I’m going to the bar and I going to get a real drink.” Vicky looked over at Fiona. “You coming, Fee?”

Fiona laughed. “Of course.” She looked back at me. “I’m just going to make sure she doesn’t do anything stupid. You guys go mingle and make your millions.” She walked over to Vicky. “We’ll be fine.” Fiona looked at Will. “I promise I won’t let her embarrass you amongst your friends and business associates, Will.”

Will looked like he was going to say something, but the girls strolled off before he could speak.

I let Fiona go out of wariness more than anything. She didn’t react at all to seeing another woman damn near wrapped around me and that bothered me.

It bothered me a lot.

“What the fuck was that all about?” Will threw his hands up in confusion.

“Does it matter? You’re getting on a plane tomorrow morning and going back to New York, so she won’t be an issue after tonight.” I shrugged a shoulder baiting him. “And if it’s about getting laid tonight, well, we both know you don’t need her for that.”

The look he shot me had the corner of my mouth lifting in a rare smile. “Fuck you, dude.”

I let out a full-blown laugh this time. “Good luck with that, man. You’re going to need it.”

Will shook his head, flipped me his middle finger, and went off to network.

Everything in me wanted to go after Fiona, but I didn’t want to add any more fuel to Vicky’s fire. So, I did what I always do when I need to drown thoughts of Fiona out of my head, I threw myself into my work.

I spent the next hour pretty much the same way I had spent the first hour here, only this time Fiona wasn’t by my side and I felt the difference instantly. I had made an effort to pass the bar area occasionally just to check if they were still there and I wasn’t the only one. I noticed Will passing it just as pathetically as I had.
