Dragon Fire Academy 1 First Term an RH academy romance - Rachel Jonas Page 0,87
it was only for her, our mate.
Somehow, she’d broken the mighty giant’s resolve to be alone forever. If I had never been sure about anything else in my life, I was sure of this.
Noelle had all our hearts in the palm of her hand, and we were unashamed. As of tonight, each of the Omegas had submitted to Spirit’s will.
From now until forever, Noelle would be revered as our Queen.

At some point in the night, Noelle finally found peace and the world didn’t implode when it was over, which came as a relief to us all. Although she fell asleep before she could say it herself, my brothers and I breathed a collective sigh of relief.
She’d made it through, but we thought it best to keep her under watch for the night, sleeping in shifts.
Day was finally breaking. The droplets of water that fell at the mouth of the cave glistened with the orange glow of early-morning sunlight. We’d weathered the storm—literally, figuratively.
I stretched, turning my neck to work out the kink I earned sleeping at an odd angle. With the main goal being to keep Noelle comfortable through the night, we all found ourselves twisted in unnatural ways as she used us as cushions at various hours. One minute her arm was draped across my chest while she snored on my shoulder, the next, her leg was strewn across Rayen’s, only for her to be practically sprawled out on top of Paulo half an hour later.
Needless to say, she was restless, but slept so hard I doubted she even knew where she was. However, we made sure of one thing—she knew she wasn’t alone. She knew we were with her.
Kai rolled his neck and yawned, being careful not to disturb Noelle. Her latest position was curled up beside him with her back to his chest, using his arm as her pillow. Judging by the look of contentment he wore, it was clear he didn’t mind. Without waking her, he kissed the back of her shoulder and seemed to settle on the idea of not moving until she’d awakened on her own.
‘Seems like she’s okay,’ I said, sending him my thoughts.
He smiled, still gazing at her wild waves spread across his arm.
‘Thankfully,’ he answered. ‘We need her.’
Just a day ago, I would have argued with him, tooth and nail, but not today. Not since discovering the truth for myself.
‘What now?’ I asked. Typically, they looked to me for these answers, but this was uncharted territory for us all.
His brow darted up. ‘Beats me’, he laughed. ‘I suppose that’s mostly up to her. She had plans before meeting us.’
His words weighed heavily on my heart, because I knew he was right. It wasn’t unheard of for a Queen to acknowledge her place within a hive, go on to first fulfill her life’s purpose, and then circle back to settle with her mates. With Noelle’s ambitions being enough to make her leave her home on the mainland, we had to consider the possibility that our union might be delayed.
If that was the case, we would respect the decision. Even if it was painful to let her go temporarily.
She stirred, and we both watched, still feeling anxious after having observed her endure so much the night before. When she settled again, we relaxed.
Taking full advantage of having her so close, Kai touched her again, pushing her hair away from her neck. However, when he did, the look he gave stirred my senses for reasons I didn’t yet understand.
‘Something wrong?’ I asked, already pushing off the ground to make my way over.
Still staring, he didn’t immediately offer an explanation, which piqued my interest even more.
I stepped over Paulo and Rayen as they slept like the dead, completely out of it from the long night. I made it over to Kai and leaned in to follow his gaze.
And there it was, clear as day, the mark of the Firekeepers emblazoned at the nape of Noelle’s neck, matching the ones my brothers and I had awakened with just a few short years ago. The Queens of the other hives received theirs shortly after their eyes were opened to their mates, but I hadn’t heard of any that showed up this quickly.
However, there was something about Noelle’s that was even more peculiar.
And … maybe a bit alarming.
Instead of the symbol of a single flame within a flame, there was a second. Only this strange addition burned with a vibrant purple where it rested upside-down above the one that matched ours, mirroring images that resembled an odd, two-toned hourglass.
Kai’s gaze met mine, and it was clear he had questions. However, this time, I didn’t have an answer. This was a first for us all, and the sight of it was admittedly unnerving.
Our power had been granted by Spirit, and our marks represented that. So, while one half of Noelle’s had clearly been given by the same power, the second half was an unknown.
She’d been marked as a vessel by another source.
As badly as I wanted to believe our biggest challenges were now behind us, I knew better.
The tug of war for Noelle’s soul had only just begun.
