I didn't care that we were in the middle of the parking lot. I barely noticed. No one could see us, anyway.
He adjusted so that he could hold on to me, pulling me closer and holding me by the waist. All I wanted was Drew. He kissed me, and the feel of his soft lips sticking to mine after a long day of not seeing him still left me breathless. I took my time, sitting there and giving him a proper greeting.
"How was your day?" I asked, pulling back just far enough so that our mouths weren't touching.
"Good," he said.
"You?"
"Good."
"Hey," he said.
"What?"
"Do you remember that night when I brought you to my dad's birthday party?"
"Of course I do," I said. "We talked about it the other day."
"Yeah, but do you remember when Blake was going crazy in the little kids' area and you went over there and talked him down?"
"Yes, I do," I said.
I slipped my hand on the inside of his jacket. There was only a thin layer of fabric between my hand and his chest, and I could easily feel the warmth and the hard muscle. Our eyes met and I flexed my hand, slowly touching him, feeling his chest, loving on him.
He took a deep breath. "That night you told me you were going to do something to my nephew. You looked at me and told me you were going to set him up to be a hero. That you would put him in a position where he could step up to a challenge. And you did just that. I watched you do it. You do the same thing to me. You set me up to be a hero. And the thing is, you would think I would feel like I'm being manipulated now that I know what you're doing, but I don't. I like it that you do that. I love it that you expect the best of me."
"I do expect the best of you. But what's making you say all this?"
"Because we're a team. I expect the best of you, too. And you just keep delivering. You're capable of great things, and they just keep happening because of your hard work."
"What's going on?" I asked.
"You got a deal for another animated series."
"You're joking. When? What happened?"
"Jim tried to call the house, but he couldn't get you, so he called my firm just a few minutes ago."
"Yeah, I had the kids over at Brian and Michelle's. What did he say?"
"That a big network executive called him with an offer for you. They want to produce a whole season."
"A network executive from where?"
He shrugged wearing a sly grin. "Aw, nothing. Just a little network called the Disney Channel."
"You're kidding."
"I would not joke about that," he said.
"Is it for sure?"
"Yes. We'll have a lot of details to work out with the contract, but yes, it's for sure. Jim has been talking to them for a while. He just didn't want to say anything and get your hopes up before he knew."
A wave of excitement and adrenaline hit me, and I held onto the sides of Drew's face, pulling him in for a kiss. He brought his hand to the back of my head, kissing me back.
He had been my husband for long enough that the guess work was out of it. He knew exactly what to do. It was with expert precision and a perfect mix of tenderness and urgency that he kissed me. His mouth was warm and it tasted like heaven.
In that moment, in the front seat of his truck, it was just Drew and me. I loved him and he loved me, and all was right with the world.
