Devil Incarnate (Boys of Preston Prep #4) - Angel Lawson Page 0,113

rush to elaborate, feeling twitchy under the weight of Heston’s gaze. “Plus, him and Gus were mean to Micha. I’m a no.”

“I trust your judgment,” Vandy says, making sure she’s looking at me when she says it. She’s made it very clear she’s not okay with Heston helping. “Who’s next?”

Caroline grins at the sheet. “Ozzy Collins. He’s nice. Funny. Smart. He doesn’t play any sports, but I’m not holding that against him.” She chews on her lip, forehead creased in thought. “The biggest drawback is being the headmaster’s son. Do we think he’ll rat us out?”

Vandy looks at the screen, head shaking. “It’s risky.”

I jump in, “Yeah, but what’s the point of being a Devil if you’re not going to take a few risks?” Since Vandy is looking unconvinced, I take a breath and turn to Heston. “What do you think?”

He’s got his thumb on his bottom lip, sort of fidgeting with it as he reads something on his phone. When he looks up, blue eyes meeting mine, he drags it down, giving me a peek of his tongue. “I don’t know him,” he answers, shrugging like he didn’t just soak my panties with that look of his. “But you’ve got to admit, there’s something satisfyingly ironic about having the headmaster’s kid in the society. Collins is a dumbass, he’ll never figure it out.”

I offer, “Well, he’s escorting me to the ball in a few weeks. Maybe I can come up with some reason to spend time with him this weekend. Feel him out?”

Caroline’s head whips around, eyes big through her glasses. “Ozzy asked you to the ball?”

“No.” I snort a laugh. “I don’t think he really believes they’re a thing. But I asked him to take me and he said yes.”

Heston looks at me, head tilted, mouth slanted into a grin. “How exactly do you plan on feeling him out? Or did you mean feeling him up?”

I shoot him a hard look. “I plan on asking questions, getting to know him better. Maybe get a better insight into his relationship with his father. Make sure he’s not some kind of mole.”

“Pretty pathetic mole,” he replies, sliding his phone into his pocket. “I mean, if that’s the case, maybe that’s why he’s going with you to the Debutart Ball. To get dirt on the Devils.”

Vandy throws me an alarmed look, and I want to curse Heston for playing into her paranoia. She’s taking this a lot more seriously than her brother probably did. “You’ll have to be—”

Caroline jerks up from her seat, shutting the laptop in one swift motion. “I’ve got to go.”

Vandy and I both gawk at her. “But our shortlist is still…you know. Short.”

If Caroline heard me, then she doesn’t show it. She wraps her charging cord up and crams it into her bag. “I have some things to do,” she coldly explains, not even meeting my gaze. If her chilly tone wasn’t enough to clue me in, then the way she fumbles with her laptop, almost dropping it in her haste to shove it into her bag, definitely is. Caroline would hurt herself before she intentionally harmed digital electronics.

Vandy and I share a look, but it’s me who reaches out to steady her. “Hey, what’s wrong? If this is about the spreadsheet—”

Caroline jerks out of my grip, swinging a bitter glare at me. “You mean the spreadsheet of guys you haven’t slept with yet? Yes, Georgia, it’s short.”

My head snaps back in shock, but the reaction hits before the words even register. I’ve never seen Caroline angry like this before, and certainly never at me.

Vandy catches the words, though, jumping to my defense with a sharp, “Hey!”

Caroline angrily prods her glasses up her nose, holding my gaze. “I don’t know why I’m even surprised. He’s been here, what, a few weeks now? I guess the guy’s gotta get the full Preston experience. Uniform, locker number, a notch beneath Georgia’s name on the beam!”

Vandy cuts in with a loud, “Whoa!” but inside, I’m just a mess of panic and horror, convinced for a moment that she knows about me and Heston.

And then she says, “I guess that’s what I get, thinking a guy like Ozzy would notice anyone but you. Classic, really.” She finally gets her laptop into the bag, hands shaking. “That’s all guys ever want. And here you are, ready and willing. Perfect! I hope the sex is fantastic.”

“Slow the fuck down!” I say, flinging my arms in front of me like I can stop the
