confident I would turn into the kind of possessive bastard Ryker often accused me of being.

“Victor.” I nodded my head at the man seated on the other side of the stately desk. The Alpha had a little grey in the temples, and while his suit was undoubtedly quality, it did little to disguise his Alpha build. His suite was palatial with windowed walls that offered views across the sparkling towers of Chimera’s government district. The styling was classical; the same taste I saw reflected in Lilly’s apartment. I knew nothing about styling or home furnishings, but I recognized quality. I wanted to roll my eyes; it was no wonder she had turned into a princess with an attitude to match.

Still, I did enjoy the taming part…

My eyes narrowed on the little black privacy box with a flashing green light on his desk.

“Black, we need you back in the field,” Victor stated without preamble.

“Like fuck I’m going back in the field.” My eyes narrowed, and I shifted my stance. “We had an agreement.”

Victor leaned back in his chair and failed to fake relaxed. “We’ve uncovered intel regarding the defector. And need to act swiftly.”

There was only one defector Victor Brach would be troubling himself to mention, and that was a Singular Omega by the name of Larissa Olson.

“In the field and undercover,” I mused. Larissa was the reason the war had escalated of late. Singulars, by nature, displayed unusual traits. Lilly was a Singular, and we’d barely scratched the surface on the impacts of her blood.

Like Lilly, Larissa was special, perhaps more so.

Because Larissa was the only Singular who could read minds.

“You think I’m going to storm the Uncorrupted power-base and snatch back the most infamous dynamic in the known universe? And besides, I used all my favors saving a bratty princess. The government doesn’t have the kind of skills I’d need.”

“Not save her,” Victor replied, fingers steepling because he knew I didn’t have a choice.

Sure, I could fuck up his life, maybe take Lilly and run. But what good would that do me? She belonged in this world, not hiding in the ass-end of the universe. Ryker could watch her while I did the op; he’d done so before. It was merely a selfish need to remain near her, especially if she was breeding.

“Observe her,” Victor continued, stirring me from my brooding contemplation.

I huffed out a breath. “Yeah, that’ll be easy. Larissa will likely read my intent and warn them. You know Lilly won’t forgive you if I die.”

A smile ghosted Victor’s lips. “Don’t die, then.”

Asshole!

“How long’s it going to take? I intend to force her heat after the ball tonight. I’d have done it sooner, but the event means a lot to her, and after Tsing’s fuckery, she deserves tonight.”

“How magnanimous of you,” he growled, leveling me with a glare. “You have some balls telling me you’re going to force my daughter into heat!”

I smirked because I was feeling untouchable right now.

“A week,” he said, getting his temper under control because she was mine now, not his, and I could and would do whatever I thought best for her. “Maybe longer.”

“If she’s breeding, I can’t be away from her for longer.”

“If she’s breeding!” His temper erupted again. “Remind me why I thought you were a good choice.”

“I’m not a good choice,” I said evenly. “I’m the worst choice you could have made. But I’m also the right choice—the only choice that could have gotten her back from Lyus. I guess you’ll have to live with it or kill me. Is this you trying to kill me, Senator Brach?”

“Rock and a hard place,” Victor muttered, but the heat had gone.

And he didn’t want me dead, but he didn’t like listening to my plans to defile his daughter… as much as she needed what I was about to do.

She was getting into that angsty headspace again. Had been fluffing her damn nest for weeks and refusing to let either of us in. I’d sneaked a peek. It was a terrible nest. I’d seen Omegas put one together in five minutes that looked better. But it was Lilly’s nest, and she was mine now—forever. Well, Ryker’s, too, the annoying bastard was starting to grow on me.

And watching him fuck her under my direction was all kinds of hot. Alphas were possessive—I was borderline animal if anyone else so much as glanced her way. But Ryker was part of us, and her, and I’d become addicted to watching him eat her out until
