Devastated (Anger Management #1) - R.L. Mathewson Page 0,60

told herself as she closed her eyes only to realize that was a bad idea and opened them back up with a whimper because she was pretty sure that it just moved.

Maybe…

No, it definitely just moved, Kylie thought, licking her lips nervously as she forced her trembling hand to release the comforter that she’d had in a death grip since she pulled back the covers and discovered that she had company. As soon as the comforter fell back in place, she slowly stepped back and when it didn’t slither free to attack her, she decided to keep going until she had her bedroom door open and she was stepping into the hallway where Hunter was waiting.

“Is something wrong, Miss Mize?” Hunter asked from where he stood, leaning back against the wall, looking bored.

Nodding, she raised a damning finger and pointed towards her room with a whispered, “S-s-snake.”

Frowning, Hunter pushed away from the wall. “Are you sure?”

Unable to answer, she settled for a nod even as she came to the realization that they were going to have to burn the house down. There really was no other option.

“Stay here,” Hunter said, gently moving her out of the way and-

“No, no, no, no, no! Don’t do that!” Kylie mumbled somewhat hysterically as she reached out to stop him only to end up standing there, realizing that this was probably the last time that she was going to see him alive.

Well, she could go in there and help him, but…

He was on his own, she decided with a sad shake of her head because she was really going to miss him.

“Miss Fondren?” he called from her bedroom, making her whimper because she’d really like to leave now.

“Yes?” she called back, really hoping that he wasn’t going to ask her to go back in there.

“Was this it?” Hunter asked, as he stepped out of her room, holding a black snake by the head as its long body hung down to-

“Wait. Why does it say, ‘Made in China’ on its stomach?” Kylie asked, glaring up at the man who had gone too far.

“Does it say that?” he murmured, looking thoughtful as he tossed the rubber snake that had taken ten years off her life aside and reached for her.

“I-I hate you,” she choked out, as Hunter wrapped his arms around her.

“You really don’t, Miss Parry,” he said, brushing his lips against hers.

“I really do,” Kylie mumbled absently, worrying her bottom lip as she glanced past him to make sure that the snake wasn’t moving…just in case.

“You really don’t, Miss Breaker,” Hunter said on a groan as he kissed the side of her neck.

“You know that you can just knock on my door, right?” she pointed out on a soft moan.

“Where would the fun in that be, Miss Meyer?” he asked, as she found herself pressed back against the wall.

Wednesday

“Where’s my bed?” Kylie asked no one in particular as she stared at the empty spot where her bed used to be. At least, she was pretty sure that it had been there before she took her shower.

Frowning, she pulled on a pair of panties and a tee shirt and headed for her bedroom door, having a pretty good idea where it went.

“Hunter, where’s my-” she barely managed to get out before she found herself pressed up against the wall with a growled, “You were taking too damn long.”

Thursday

“Please stop,” Kylie mumbled weakly, as she typed her passcode into her phone only to have the screen shake and prompt her to try again as she stood there, staring helplessly down at her phone as it continued playing Justin Bieber’s “Baby,” until she couldn’t take it any longer and headed for her bedroom door.

Praying that Hunter was already there, she opened her door and-

“Where did that couch come from?” she couldn’t help but wonder when she spotted Hunter sitting on a large leather couch that she’d never seen before.

“It’s always been here, Miss Black,” Hunter said, as he gestured for her to hand the phone to him.

Wondering how he’d managed to get the couch up the stairs by himself, she crossed the short distance and found herself smiling when he used the move to pull her down onto his lap. Plucking the phone from her hand, he turned off the song that had her stumbling out of the bathroom a few minutes ago, desperate to make it stop.

“Can I ask you something?” she asked, as she settled more comfortably on his lap.

“That depends,” Hunter murmured, as he laid
