Destroy For Her - R.B. Hilliard Page 0,57
it was delicious. “Have you been to the doctor?”
“No, I haven’t even told Buck about it. Had Lucy not accosted me, I wouldn’t have told you either.”
Lucy shot her a look. “You were acting like a cow.”
“Well, excuse me. I’m hungry and hormonal.”
“Wait until the horny hits,” Lucy warned.
“It’s already hit,” Reyn said through a mouthful of dip.
Sage kicked back in her chair and weighed Reyn’s options. “You have to tell Buck.”
Lucy nodded. “I agree.”
“It’ll make him feel pressured to marry me,” Reyn whined.
Lucy shot Sage a look. They both knew that Buck was chomping at the bit to marry Reyn. He was waiting for her to give him a sign that she wanted the same thing.
“Honey, Buck wants to marry you. He’s afraid that you don’t want to marry him,” Lucy told her.
Reyn gasped and started coughing. “Cracker down the wrong pipe,” she wheezed between coughs. Two glasses of water and a pee break later, she ordered them to explain.
Sage let Lucy take the floor. “After losing your fiancé and being kidnapped, he wanted to give you time. He’s waiting for you to make the first move,” she explained.
Reyn snorted. “I made a move alright.” When the laughter subsided, Reyn told them what was really bothering her. “What if I lose it?”
“You haven’t, so stop acting like you have,” Lucy scolded.
“I agree with Lucy, honey. You’re letting your fear get in the way of what should be a happy occasion. Why don’t you set an appointment with the doctor? Lucy and I can go with you. If things look good, you tell Buck. If not, we can help you decide what to do, but in the meantime, you need to relax.”
After getting Reyn on board with Sage’s plan, they headed back to the mall, where she finally found a dress.
That night, as Sage lay next to a sleeping Alex, she finally understood. As much as she wanted to tell him about Reyn’s pregnancy, she couldn’t. Just as he couldn’t tell her things about the club. They weren’t his to tell or hers to know. She didn’t like keeping things from him, but sometimes it was necessary.
Chapter Twenty-One
AX DROPPED PETAL at school early Friday morning while Sage headed to The Cave to help with wedding preparations. Since LuLu had excused Steele and the boys for most of the day, they decided to go off-roading. Taz had recently purchased a Jeep Wrangler that had been lifted and outfitted with an upgraded suspension and massive off-road tires. He bragged that the thing could almost crawl up a straight wall. Ink had a 1970’s CJ-5 that he’d dropped a ridiculously powerful V-8 engine into. It was outfitted with long-arm shocks and Mickey Thompson Extreme Country Tires. They all met at Steele and LuLu’s place where Ax, Steele, and Buck hopped into Ink’s new ride while Sledge, Tiny, and Arson piled in with Taz.
At one point, Ink sunk the CJ up to the top of his wheels while crossing a creek. It took the better part of an hour for Taz to winch him out. A little later, Taz almost stood his Wrangler onto its back bumper while crawling up a rock ledge.
Ax couldn’t recall the last time he’d spent the day with his boys. It was a rare moment where no one talked about club shit or pussy, other than to rib Steele about joining the ball ‘n’ chain club. It was just a group of friends having fun.
They made it back to Steele’s around two. Ax peeled off shortly after that to pick up Petal from school. He’d promised Sage that he would have her at The Cave by four. That gave him just enough time to shower and change.
He liked driving Petal to and from school. It was their special time together. Both he and Sage had been worried that the transition from Mexico to The Cave and then to his house, would be too much for her, but she seemed to be acclimating.
“Can we paint my room pink?” she asked from her bright-pink, Barbie-themed car seat.
Ax thought of his earlier request of no pink and shook his head. Of course, she’d want to paint her room pink. Glancing into the rearview mirror, he caught her eye. “How about blue?”
Her nose scrunch made him smile. “Blue is for boys.”
She had a point. “How about yellow?” Her nose scrunched again. “Barbie’s name is yellow; just look on your seat,” he pointed out.
Her face suddenly lit up. “I know! How about pink and
