Destroy For Her - R.B. Hilliard Page 0,40

that it was about the wedding mess. Jealousy flaring, she asked, “Why were you at Alex’s house?” She had yet to see Alex’s house.

“The police wanted to question him about Emma’s death, and since I’m the club’s attorney, Steele wanted me to be there. Although, it really wasn’t necessary because Ax handled it beautifully.” She glanced at her watch. “Steele’s probably wondering where we are.”

Sage grimaced. “Umm, before we meet with Steele, I need to tell you something.”

“If it’s about the wedding, Taz already told me.”

Sage didn’t know whether to be mad or relieved. “I promise I was going to tell you, I just—”

“Relax, Beavis, I’m not mad. You tried to tell me the night I ran out on you. It’s not like we’ve had a whole lot of time to talk since then. Now, stop fretting and get a move on. The kids—that includes Petal—are planning on turning the back half of the upstairs living area into a giant sleeping nest, and I have to make sure they don’t kill each other in the process.”

They were almost to Steele’s office when Petal found them. “Mommy! Can I have a sleepover with Baston and Benji? I promise to be good and go to sleep. Pretty please, can I?”

Sage gave her squirming daughter a hug. “Yes, but only if you agree to go straight to bed.”

Petal’s nose scrunched. “I promise,” she grumbled.

“What’s that? I didn’t hear you.” Sage held her hand to her ear as if she were hard of hearing.

“I promise!” Petal giggled, before kissing her stomach and tearing off down the hallway.

Steele was in his office. Unfortunately, he was alone. She’d hoped Alex would be there, and they might have a chance to talk.

They took the seats across from Steele’s desk, and Lucy jumped right in. “I reached out to an attorney friend of mine in Mexico, and he’s agreed to help us with annulment proceedings based on the marriage contract being invalid due to coercion. With the proper documentation, Sage won’t need to appear in court. I told him to start preparing the required power of attorney. They’ll need to execute it at the Mexican consulate, and he can take it from there. He said it should go quickly.”

Once Lucy finished laying out her plan, Steele’s gaze shifted to Sage. “Are you good with that?”

Sage didn’t understand half of what Lucy said, but if it meant getting her out of the marriage to Carlos, then hell yes, she was all for it. She smiled. “I’m better than good with it.”

“Great. Keep me posted,” he told Lucy.

“You got it,” Lucy said. “If you’ll excuse me, I need to check on the kids.”

“I’ll be there in a minute,” Sage told her.

She waited for Lucy to leave before addressing Steele. “I’ve been thinking. I know Carlos killed Emma.” His silver-eyed stare unnerved her and comforted her at the same time. She knew he had her back, but he needed to know she had his as well.

“What if he didn’t? What if it was a coincidence?” Steele asked.

She scoffed. “There’s no such thing as coincidence when it comes to Carlos. I can make him stop. If you promise to keep Petal safe, I’ll go back to him. I’ll make sure he leaves the club alone.”

Steele crossed his arms and leveled her with a scathing look. “If you go back, we both know he’ll kill you.” She started to reply, but he cut her off. “It might not be tomorrow or even next year, but a sadistic fuck like that wouldn’t be able to help himself. He would eventually go too far. Now, what kind of man would I be if I let that happen?”

“A smart one,” she retorted.

“A stupid and irresponsible one,” he snapped. “Ax loves you. We all love you. You and Petal are part of our family, and we protect our family at all costs.”

She huffed. He didn’t get it. No one did. “He’s not going to stop.”

Eyes flashing with anger, he spoke in a soft, deadly voice, “Yes, he will.”

Sage stood. This was pointless. She never should have said anything. She was almost to the door when he called her name. She didn’t want to hear what he had to say, but out of respect, she glanced back.

“Don’t even think about contacting Carlos. If you do, there will be hell to pay.”

She gave him a withering look before stomping out the door.

Chapter Fifteen

SAGE MARCHED OUT of Steele’s office and ran smack into Alex.

His warm hands gripped her shoulders. “Whoa,
