The Delivery of Decor (Shiloh Ridge Ranch in Three Rivers #7) - Liz Isaacson Page 0,127
around her house, feeling very much like a boring, old maid.
She needed some excitement in her life—and not the kind where her entire Oklahoma City office was offline.
But the cowboy kind.
The sexy cowboy kind, and she grabbed her phone and went down the hall to her bedroom and bathroom. If Judge was coming over, she needed to freshen up a little bit. She caught sight of herself in the mirror and gasped.
The manly polo with Nichols Networking stitched over the breast came right off. “I need new company shirts,” she muttered to herself. Something with a V-neck or something that didn’t make her look so boxy.
She stepped out of her work boots and pants and slipped into some black slacks made of something silky.
“Mom?” Lucy Mae called.
“I’m changing,” she said, turning her back toward the door, as her daughter would come in whether she was changing or not. She searched her limited closet space for something appropriate for a date in her own home.
She glanced at her daughter as she entered the closet. She must’ve been able to read June’s mind, because Lucy Mae said, “You want something to bring out your eyes.” She stepped over to the rack and started flipping. “And since it’s the beginning of summer, and you’re a little pale from winter, you want—”
“I am not pale from winter,” June said. “The sun’s been shining in Texas for months.”
“Something blue or purple, I think,” Lucy Mae continued, not bothered at all by June’s protest. She plucked a purple blouse from the options and held it up. “This one’s really cute.”
The blouse had little white confetti blotches all over it, and June reached out to touch the material. It was light and airy, and June would feel confident in it. “Okay,” she said, taking the blouse off the hanger. She pulled it over her head and then took the ponytail holder out of her hair.
“Up or down?”
“Down, Mom. Always down when you’re trying to impress a man.”
June’s lungs seized. “I’ve always had it up when I’ve seen him before.”
Lucy Mae smiled and reached over to fluff June’s hair. “Then he’ll be doubly impressed tonight.”
“Yeah, the way I heated up that frozen lasagna is going to win him over for good.”
Lucy Mae giggled and kept arranging June’s hair. “Looks good now. Come and let me do your makeup.”
“I don’t want a lot of makeup.”
“I’ll choose three things,” Lucy Mae said. “I won’t do a single thing more.” She opened the top drawer in June’s vanity and started digging through her makeup bag. “Mascara, foundation, and lip gloss.” She held them up, and the makeup looked so innocent. “Doable?”
“Doable,” June said, and she followed Lucy Mae back into the kitchen. She sat at the dining room table, and she closed her eyes and let her daughter start to paint her face.
The doorbell rang, and Lucy Mae left quickly to go answer it. As she greeted her boyfriend, June’s phone rang. Judge’s name sat on the screen, and she hurried to answer the call.
“Hey,” she said. “You really called back.”
“I was chasing a turkey, believe it or not,” he said with a laugh. “Stupid thing got into some cord, and we needed to get it off his feet.”
“Sounds exciting,” she said. “I didn’t know you had turkeys.”
“We have a little bit of everything up here,” he said with a sigh. “Let me guess—something came up?”
“Yes,” June said, grinning to herself and then looking at Lucy Mae and Timmy as they came into the kitchen. “I forgot my daughter had a date tonight, and I made dinner for her so we could go out and I wouldn’t feel guilty. I’m wondering if you’d like to come to my place to eat instead of going out.”
“Absolutely,” Judge said. “I’m headed home now, so I just need to shower and make the drive. Say, an hour?”
“Can’t wait,” June said, hoping she’d used a flirtatious voice.
“Wow, Mom,” Lucy Mae said as Judge said good-bye, and June hung up.
“What?” she asked. “You can’t leave until you finish my makeup.”
“Can’t wait,” Lucy Mae said in a falsely high voice, a poor imitation of June. She giggled and waved with the mascara wand. “Eyes closed. I’m going to make your face match that flirty tone, and you’re going to show this cowboy he shouldn’t let a day go by without talking to you.”
“From your lips to God’s ears,” June sad, immediately following that up with a silent prayer that the Lord would indeed help her with her at-home dinner date with Judge Glover in only an hour.
